UNCG Baseball Looks To Complete Season Sweep Of State

GREENSBORO, N.C.  – UNCG baseball hosts nearby ACC rival NC State this Tuesday, as the pair completes this year's home-and-home series inside UNCG Baseball Stadium at 6 p.m. The Spartans are looking to sweep this year's two-game slate against NC State after defeating the Wolfpack 16-13 on the first Tuesday of the 2021 season. UNCG had a season-high five doubles in that contest, while delivering 14 hits, second only to the 22 they had against Elon on March 7th.

UNCG is coming off its first SoCon series win of the season, sweeping a Saturday doubleheader at VMI to take the series, a day in which the Spartans scored 24 runs, on 24 hits and four homers. NC State is still in the midst of its ACC series with No. 11 North Carolina, with the final two games of the weekend getting suspended to this Monday because of inclement weather. The Wolfpack took the series opener against the Tar Heels 9-2 on Friday for their second conference win of the season, looking to clinch their first ACC series of the spring.

HOW'S THEIR FORM?
-- The Spartans are coming off a doubleheader sweep of VMI this past Saturday, outscoring the Keydets 24-5 over those two contests. UNCG enters this Tuesday with just one loss in the midweek and just one loss to ACC opponents after falling 5-2 at Duke last Tuesday. The Spartan program already defeated NC State once this year after taking down what was then a No. 12 Wolfpack squad, back in February
-- Due to some inclement weather, the Wolfpack were forced to suspend the final two games of their series with UNC to Monday, and were still yet to play those contests at the writing of this article. State did take the series opener from the Tar Heels 9-2 however, securing the team's second straight win, after beating UNCW in the midweek, 5-3

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
-- The Spartans rank fifth in the country with 10 triples on the year, the top mark in the Southern Conference. Corey Rosier's three are third in Division I baseball, just two behind national leader Nathan Church of UC Irvine. Zack Budzik and Hogan Windish each have two triples in 2021 as well
-- Rosier also has a SoCon-best 35 knocks this spring, sitting 14th in the country. The outfielder saw his nine-game hitting streak come to an end during game one of the Spartans' doubleheader at VMI, however his two walks in that game gives Rosier 16 straight appearances in which he's reached first safely
-- First baseman Josh Madole has hit in each of his last five games, increasing his .290 batting average to .310 in that span. The redshirt junior drove in four runs against the Keydets, as did Hogan Windish, while Budzik drove in a team-high of seven. Budzik has driven in nine runs in his last four appearances
-- Lefty reliever Price King has reduced his ERA by nearly two runs over his past three appearances, giving up a single earned run during that time. King has sprayed 13 hits over that 12.2 innings of work while surrendering just two walks. He also has a combined 10 Ks during those three trips to the bump, striking out four in 5.2 IP against Samford and four in 4.1 IP against VMI

SCOUTING NC STATE
-- The Wolfpack have three players hitting over .300 in 2021, led by a .360 average from junior Austin Murr. Luca Tresh is hitting .339 with a .729 slugging percentage, while his seven home runs are tied with the Spartans' Hogan Windish for 33rd in Division I baseball
-- Freshman righty Cooper King has been one of NC State's best arms out of the bullpen this year, holding a 2.57 ERA over five appearances. He's allowed just three hits with a .136 BAA, but has walked four batters in his 7.0 innings of work thus far

SERIES HISTORY
-- The Spartans are 9-28 against the Wolfpack all-time, beating State in a 16-13 final in Raleigh earlier this year. UNCG's 16 runs are the most any non-ACC member has had at Doak Field in the past decade
-- That win ended a five-game winning streak that the Wolfpack had running against the Spartans
