Wantz Promoted To The Majors By The LA Angels

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro baseball alum Andrew Wantz's dreams have come true. He is officially a major league baseball player after being called up to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Saturday afternoon following an impressive performance at Triple-A for the Salt Lake Bees.
 
In 25.2 innings over eight appearances, Wantz compiled a 2.10 ERA. He struck out 25 batters and walked six while holding opponents to a .213 batting average. His ERA at Salt Lake was nearly two runs lower than anyone else on the roster with at least 20 innings pitched. 
 
Wantz, a seventh-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels, appeared in 102 games as a Spartan. For his career at UNCG, Wantz pitched 153.2 innings with 278 strikeouts.
 
wantzIn 2016, the Holly Springs, N.C. native was an All-Southern Conference First-Team selection. He was the SoCon Co-Pitcher of the Year and an all-conference selection. He also earned All-SoCon Second-Team honors in 2018.
 
Wantz started his career in 2018 for the Burlington Bees, the Low Single-A affiliate of the Angels.
 
Wantz went 1-2 with a 3.71 ERA in 17 innings. He struck out 36 batters and walked 12. In 2019, Wantz started seven games for the Inland Empire 66ers. He pitched 54 innings and had a 3.56 ERA while posting a 5-3 record. Wantz struck out 64 batters.
 
Wantz was selected to represent the Sixers in the Single-A All-Star game, but before he could so he was promoted to Double-A Mobile.
