Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Losing the doubles point is not the textbook method of winning a tennis match.
However, in two matches against Southern Conference opponents this spring, it's been the perfect formula for the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's tennis team.
Once again, UNCG stuck to its method and stormed back to capture a 4-3 victory over The Citadel in a make-up match played at Wofford Thursday afternoon. The Spartans are 2-0 in Southern Conference play using their early recipe of conquering adversity after dropping the doubles point and remaining together to win at least four singles matches to emerge victorious.
UNCG has won its first two SoCon matches for the first time since 2014 when it beat Chattanooga and Georgia State.
UNCG won this match the same exact way it won its SoCon opener against Samford on March 6. The Spartans won five of six singles matches after dropping the doubles point.
The Spartans got victories from
Nico Grewe,
Hugh Knapp,
Roger Rogowski, and
Christopher Johns during singles competition to complete the comeback. The No. 3 UNCG doubles team of Knapp and
Cooper Wyett was a 6-1 winner. The Citadel won the next two doubles contests.
"The team definitely is excited to get another conference win," Grewe said. "It was a tough day today so for everyone to pull through and get a win was big. My match was a battle. He had a huge serve, so it was hard to get a break. I felt like I was always playing from behind but in the end, I think it just came down to who wanted it more."
Grewe prevailed in a three-set thriller at No. 1 singles. He won the first set 6-3. After dropping the second set 6-4, he overpowered his opponent by the same score in the decisive set which clinched the match for the Spartans. It was Grewe's eighth victory this season.
Knapp also earned his eighth win of the season with an easy straight set conquest at No. 3 singles. His victory tied the match at 1-1 and set the tone for the remaining singles matches.
Christopher Johns followed with a straight set win at No. 6 singles to give UNCG a 2-1 advantage.
Rogowski and Grewe won their two matches to give UNCG what it needed to return home with a nice win. Rogowski edged his opponent in a first set tie breaker and remained strong in the second set to hang on for the crucial decision.
