Windish Knocks Two Homers in Setback to Bears

GREENSBORO, N.C.- Hogan Windish hit two home runs in the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team's 12-8 setback against the Mercer Bears on Thursday afternoon.
 
Kennedy Jones got on base with an error by the Bear's right-fielder. Windish tied the game at two runs with a homer over the left-field wall.
 
The Spartans added a run in five straight innings starting in the third. Mitchell Smith's single through the left side scored Hardison and forced the Bears to make a pitching change. Dallas Callahan was brought home in the fourth on another error by the Bears.
 
Mercer grew its lead to three in the top of the fifth but a sacrifice fly from Zack Budzik scored Pres Cavenaugh to cut the deficit to two. An RBI single from Jones brought Brett Kelly across the plate. A sacrifice fly from Caleb Freeman scored Smith in the bottom of the seventh.
 
Windish scored the Spartan's final run with a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Jared Mathewson pitched 5.0 innings and struck out four. His season total to 51 and puts him 22 away from reaching the 200-career mark.
 
Five more Spartan pitchers made an appearance on the mound. KJ Wells led with five strikeouts in 2.1 innings pitched.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • This is the first multi-home run game for Windish this season.
  • His career total is 25 which makes him tied for fourth in the UNCG record books.
  • Hardison stretches his on-base streak to 28 games, which gives him sole possession of the 10th place spot in the record books.
  • Jake Wolf, Sam Murchison, Ryan Rouse, and Cam Noble also made appearances. They only allowed two hits combined.
  • Cavenaugh had the lone stolen base for the Spartans.

"I thought we competed well. Our pitching let us down. It's let us down all year. We got to be better on the mound. We've got to have guys step up and that falls on me. We just have to continue to challenge ourselves to be better on the mound. When we score eight runs, 89% of the time in college baseball, you win. We've lost seven games when we scored seven or more runs. Our pitching has to be better and that falls on me."

UNCG will continue the series with the Bears tomorrow at 6 p.m. Austin Parsley will start on the mound for the Spartans while Ryan Lobus will start for the Bears.
