ABCA/Rawlings Announces 2022 Division I All-Region Teams

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team continues to receive recognition from associations after winning its third SoCon Tournament and earning its fourth bid to the NCAA Tournament. Â

The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and Rawlings announced the 2022 Division I All-America Teams and junior
Hogan Windish was selected to the second team, as announced by the organization today, prior to the start of the 2022 NCAA Division I College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

He is just the fifth Spartan to earn ABCA All-America status, and first to be on the second team. Chad Sykes was the last Spartan to be named All-American, earning third team recognition in 2019.

The All-Region teams were announced earlier in the week with Windish and senior
Alex Hoppe earning Atlantic All-Region first team honors. Freshman
Kennedy Jones was voted to the second team. First recognized in 1949, the ABCA/Rawlings All-America teams are selected by the ABCA All-America & Coach of the Year committees. This brings the Spartans' total to 10 All-Region honors from the ABCA & Rawlings.

All three are the only Southern Conference (SoCon) honorees on either the All-Region or All-America teams.

Prior to the NCAA Tournament Windish earned his first All-America honor this season as he was named to the Collegiate Baseball All-American second team. He was named the SoCon coaches Player of the Year, while earning a spot on the All-SoCon first team. He earned SoCon Player of the Week on February 21. During preseason, he was named to the SoCon Preseason second team. For the second-consecutive year, Windish was named to the 2022 Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award Watch List. He was the only representative from the SoCon.

The Jefferson, North Carolina native ended the season leading the conference in batting average (.380) and on base percentage (.496). He was second in slugging percentage (.702) and walks (40), tied for third in RBI (60), fourth in total bases (146), tied for fifth in doubles (19) and home runs (16), tied for sixth in hits (76) and assists (129), tied for ninth in runs scored (54), and ninth in fielding double plays (27).

Hoppe was most recently named to the Collegiate Baseball All-America third team as a pitcher. He was presented the SoCon Pinnacle Award following the SoCon Tournament, which is given to a student-athlete on the championship team with the highest GPA. Hoppe was also named the unanimous Pitcher of the Year, while earning a spot on the All-SoCon first team.

Among the conference, the Clinton, Iowa native concluded the season first in home runs allowed (1), second in opposing batting average (.194), hits allowed (47), runs allowed (26), earned runs allowed (21), and doubles allowed (7), tied for second in wins (8), third in ERA (2.91), tied for third in games in relief (25), tied for fourth in batters struck out looking (22), tied for fifth in batters struck out (82) and appearances (25), tied for sixth in saves (3), and tied for seventh in games finished (10).

Jones was most recently named to the Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America Team. He was named the SoCon Walt Nadzak Most Outstanding Player following the SoCon Tournament as well as being named to the SoCon All-Tournament Team. He finished the tournament batting .432, scoring 10 runs, with 16 hits. He crushed five homers and drove in 17 RBI. He set tournament records in hits, RBI, at-bats, and total bases. His five home runs matched a tournament record.

The Norfolk, Virginia native was named to the All-SoCon second team, as well as the All-Freshman Team. He was also named the SoCon Player of the Month for February. Among the conference, he was first in hits (90) and RBI (73), tied for second in at bats (243), third in batting average (.370) and total bases (147), tied for third in triples (4), fourth in runs scored (62), and ninth in slugging percentage (.605).

The Spartans concluded their season with a 34-30 overall mark and a 12-9 SoCon record, making it third-year head coach
Billy Godwin's first year with 30 or more wins in the Blue & Gold. This was the first year since 2017 that the Spartans made the NCAA Tournament after taking the SoCon Tournament title behind seven games in four days.
