Baseball Set To Open 2023 Season Friday Against Northeastern

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball is set to open its 2023 season this weekend, welcoming Northeastern to the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The teams will play a three-game series from Friday through Sunday with the first pitch slated for 4 p.m., 2 p.m., and 1 p.m., in respective order.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS 
  • UNCG welcomes 16 new players, 11 of those being true freshmen and five being transfers. 
  • UNCG won the 2022 SoCon Tournament in May. 
  • The Spartans had a 34-30 overall record in 2022 season and 12-9 SoCon mark.
  • The Spartans will play opponents from seven different conferences this season including CAA (3), ACC (3), Big Ten (2), ASUN (1), Big XII (1), Big South (1), WCC (1)
  • The Spartans will host Notre Dame and Wake Forest this year, where the Fighting Irish made it to the College World Series and the Demon Deacons appeared in their 14th NCAA Tournament.
  • UNCG will play Northeastern, Notre Dame, and Rutgers for the first time in program history. 
  • Kennedy Jones and Mitchell Smith were named to Preseason All-SoCon First Team.
  • Dallas Callahan was named to the Preseason All-SoCon Second Team.
  • Jones was named to the Golden Spikes Preseason Watch List. 
 
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES 
  • Northeastern had a 31-29-1 record to end the 2022 seasons, falling to Hofstra in the CAA Championship game. 
  • The Huskies are slated fourth in the CAA Preseason Coaches' Poll for 2023. 
  • Danny Crossen was named to the Bobby Bragan Slugger Award watch list.
  • Northeastern plays 14 non-conference games including facing the Boston Red Sox in Fort Myers, Florida for an exhibition. 
  • The Huskies play three new teams including UNCG, Indiana State, and Duke. 
  • Mike Sirota, Wyatt Scotti, and Jordy Allard were named to the CAA Preseason All-Conference Teams. 
 
ON DECK 
UNCG will host Wake Forest for its first of two games against the Demon Deacons on Tuesday, February 21, with a first pitch at 4 p.m. 
 
The Spartans continue the seven-game home stand hosting Notre Dame for a three-game series, February 24 through February 26, slated for 4 p.m., 2 p.m., and 1 p.m., in respective order. 
 
HISTORY
This will be the first time the Spartans will play the Huskies.
