Baseball to Take Road Trip to South Florida

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team will take its longest road trip of the 2024 season this weekend to Tampa, Fla., to face the University of South Florida in a three-game series from Friday, March 15 to Sunday, March 17 at the USF Baseball Stadium.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
  • The Spartans last dominated in an 18-3 win over No. 13 N.C. State in Raleigh on Tuesday, March 12.
  • Tuesday's win marks the second win over a ranked opponent for UNCG this season.
  • The last time UNCG defeated two ranked opponents in the same season was back in 2021. That was also the last time the Spartans defeated N.C. State coming on Feb. 23, 2021, 16-13 in Raleigh.
  • Caleb Cozart led both teams with four runs and five RBI.
  • Trey Truitt paced both teams with four hits.
  • Starting pitcher, Julien Peissel threw a total of four strikeouts.
  • UNCG had zero errors to N.C. State's two.
  • The Spartans recorded a season high 16 hits, while the Wolfpack had four.

  • UNCG heads to South Florida with a 9-7 overall record on the 2024 stanza.
  • The Spartans are currently ranked in the top-20 nationally in four statistical categories: hit by pitch (37), sacrifice bunts (14), stolen bases (38), and stolen bases per game (2.38).
  • UNCG is leading The Southern Conference (SoCon) with its 37 HBP's.
  • Matt Venuto is ranked 26th nationally with a 0.54 hit by pitch per game average.
  • Cozart stands out nationally at 16th with eight home runs and is 10th with 28 RBI on the season. Cozart leads the Spartans with 18 runs on the season.
  • Freshman Jeremy Wolf is currently ranked 14th nationally with four sacrifice bunts and ninth in the country with a 0.79 stolen bases per game average.
  • Jake Ogden leads the Spartans with 17 hits on the season.
  • Cozart was named the SoCon Player of the Week and the Perfect Game Player of the Week after hitting four home runs in the season opening series against Fairfield.
  • Peissel was selected as the SoCon Pitcher of the Week after starting off on the mound in UNCG's win over No. 1 Wake Forest on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Peissel leads the Spartans with 17 strikeouts on the season.
  • UNCG was tabbed to finish sixth in the 2024 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Rob Ready was named to the Preseason All-SoCon second team.
  • The Spartans finished the 2023 season with a 25-34 overall record and 9-12 in SoCon play to earn the sixth spot in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll. UNCG concluded the season in the semifinal round of the SoCon Tournament, falling to No. 1 Samford, 9-5.
  • The Spartans welcome 22 newcomers for the 2024 season: 10 transfers and 12 freshmen.

  • South Florida heads into this weekend's series with a 10-6 overall record.
  • The Bulls most recently defeated Maine, 16-6 in a midweek matchup in Tampa, Fla., on Wednesday, March 13, only lasting seven innings.
  • Prior to Wednesday's matchup, South Florida, hosted Greensboro foe, North Carolina A&T in a weekend series. The Bulls went 2-1 against the Aggies over the weekend.
  • The Bulls stand out nationally at seventh with 17 double plays and ninth with a 1.13 double plays per game average.
  • South Florida leads the American Atlantic Conference (AAC) in doubles per game (2.33), on base percentage (.407) and stolen bases per game (2.00).
  • Drew Brutcher is currently ranked first nationally with 23 walks. 
  • Bobby Boser stands out nationally at 25th with seven home runs and 30th with 24 RBI this season.
  • Ben Rozenblum is 21st nationally after recording two triples this season.  
  • John Montes leads the Bulls with 24 hits.
  • Hunter Mink stands out on the mound with 25 strikeouts.
