Baseball Travels to No. 14 North Carolina

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team will travel to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, to take on the No. 14 North Carolina Tar Heels at Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. This is the first time the two sides have met since 2021.

 LAST TIME OUT      

  • The Spartans wrapped up the sweep against the University of Chicago-Illinois (UIC) on Sunday with the 8-2 win.  

  • Tanner Berry ended the week knocking in 12 RBIs with 11 base knocks in five games played.   

  • The UNCG bats were hot last week, tallying 66 hits, 39 RBIs, 14 doubles and five home runs in five games played.  

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS         

  • The Spartans enter the midweek contest 10-11 overall and 4-4 in road contests.      

  • UNCG is nationally ranked in: triples (2nd/10), triples per game (3rd/ 0.48), sacrifice flies (7th/15), stolen bases (21st/ 49) and hits ( 51st/ 197).  

  • This will be the third time this season that UNCG will face a top 25 opponent, with the two previous being then-ranked No. 14 Kentucky on Feb. 13-14, and then-ranked No. 15Wake Forest on Feb. 24.  

  • Jacob Budzik leads the team and is ranked 27th in the nation in doubles with nine. He also ranks first in The Southern Conference (SoCon) in triples with three.   

  • Jake Mueller leads the team in hits and RBIs, with 30 and 19, respectively.  

  • Redshirt freshman Isaac Miles has been leading the way for the Spartans in the pitching staff, boasting a 4.43 ERA in six appearances with 22 innings pitched and an unblemished 3-0 record.   

  • Out of the bullpen, Ayden West and Ethan Nobles have been the most effective relievers with each having an ERA under 3.00 in 11 and 13 innings pitched, respectively.   

  • The Spartans were voted to finish fifth in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.             

  • Junior left-handed pitcher Noah Chapman was named to the Preseason All-SoCon Second Team ahead of the season after throwing 68.1 innings with a 5.14 ERA in 21 appearances in 2025.          

  • UNCG concluded the 2025 season with a 21-33 overall record and went 9-12 in SoCon play.          

  • Head Coach Cody Ellis enters his third season at the helm of the Spartans, guiding them to a 65-65 record during his time.          

SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS   

  • North Carolina welcomes the Spartans with a 17-3-1 record and a 13-2-1 record at home this season.  

  • Most recently, the Tar Heels went on the road and swept the University of California, outhitting the Golden Bears 30-23 in the three contests played.  

  • North Carolina is nationally ranked in: triples (8th/8), sacrifice flies (13th/14), fielding percentage (18th/.983), earned run average (18th/3.23) and runs (24th/182).  

  • The North Carolina offense is led by Erik Paulsen, who is hitting .357 with .511 on-base percentage and .671 slugging percentage. He has driven in 23 RBIs.  

  • Colin Hyneck and Owen Hull are the other dangerous bats in the lineup, each driving home over 20 RBIs so far this season  

  • The pitching staff is led by Jason DeCaro, boasting a 1.67 ERA on the season in five starts.  

  • Head Coach Scott Forbes enters his sixth season as head of the program with a 200-104record.    

SERIES HISTORY VS. THE TAR HEELS 
The Tar Heels hold the 18-7 advantage over the Spartans in the series. The last meeting between the two was on May 11, 2021, where UNCG took the 3-2 win over North Carolina at Boshamer Stadium.

UP NEXT         
The Spartans will begin SoCon action this Friday at UNCG Baseball Stadium as they take on the ETSU Buccaneers in a three-game series stretching over the weekend. First pitch on Friday is slated for 6:00 p.m.
