Baseball Opens SoCon Play Against ETSU

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team will begin The Southern Conference (SoCon) action by welcoming the ETSU Buccaneers for a three-game series at UNCG Baseball Stadium. The series will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday with game two starting on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The final game will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

 LAST TIME OUT       

  • The Spartans lost to No. 14 North Carolina, 8-2, at Boshamer Stadium on Wednesday.  

  • Luke Jenkins led the way with two RBIs in the contest.  

  • Eight Spartan pitchers were used in the contest.  

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS          

  • The Spartans enter the series 10-12 overall and 5-7 in home contests.       

  • Brody Gardner has been mashing at home, hitting .407 with 11 hits, five RBIs, four doubles and a home run.  

  • Brantley Truitt leads the team in RBIs at home with 11 in nine games played.  

  • UNCG is nationally ranked in: triples (2nd/10), triples per game (3rd/ 0.48), sacrifice flies (7th/15), stolen bases (21st/ 49) and hits (51st/ 201).   

  • Jacob Budzik leads the team and is ranked 28th in the nation in doubles with nine. He also ranks first in the SoCon in triples with three.    

  • Jake Mueller leads the team in hits and RBIs, with 30 and 19, respectively.   

  • Redshirt freshman Isaac Miles has been leading the way for the Spartans in the pitching staff, boasting a 4.43 ERA in six appearances with 22 innings pitched and an unblemished 3-0 record.    

  • Out of the bullpen, Ayden West has been the most effective in relief with a 2.45 ERA. The freshman has also not given up a run at home this year in four appearances. 

  • The Spartans were voted to finish fifth in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.              

  • Junior left-handed pitcher Noah Chapman was named to the Preseason All-SoCon Second Team ahead of the season after throwing 68.1 innings with a 5.14 ERA in 21 appearances in 2025.           

  • UNCG concluded the 2025 season with a 21-33 overall record and went 9-12 in SoCon play.           

  • Head Coach Cody Ellis enters his third season at the helm of the Spartans, guiding them to a 65-66 record during his time.           

SCOUTING THE BUCCANEERS    

  • ETSU enters the opening SoCon series in Greensboro at 14-5 overall.  

  • Most recently, the Bucs swept Bradley in a three-game series in Johnson City.  

  • ETSU has one of the best offenses in the nation, ranking 20th in on-base percentage (.487), 20th in batting average (.320), 26th in slugging percentage (.522) and 32nd in runs (176).  

  • The offense is led by Henry Ferguson, Axel Menedez and Tristian Curless, who each have over 20 RBIs this season. 

  • The Buccaneers have eight pitchers with a sub-4.00 ERA.  

  • The pitching staff is led by Tanden Bell, boasting a 3.09 ERA on the season in five startsand 24 innings of action.   

  • Last season, ETSU ended the season with a 41-17 record and a SoCon Tournament title. They advanced to the Nashville regional before losing to Vanderbilt and Louisville in back-to-back games.  

  • Head Coach Joe Pennucci enters his ninth season as head of the program with a 245-166record.     

SERIES HISTORY VS. THE BUCCANEERS 
The Spartans hold the 44-23 advantage over the Buccaneers in the series. UNCG has won the series the past two years, with last time ETSU won the three-game series in 2023.

The Spartans will travel to Lynchburg, Virginia to take on Liberty on Tuesday at Worthington Field at Liberty Baseball Stadium. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m.
