Baseball Hosts VMI For Final Home Series of the 2026 Season

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team wraps up the spring 2026 home slate with The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe VMI at UNCG Baseball Stadium starting on Friday at 6:00 p.m. Game two will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday with game three beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.  The Spartans will honor their 10 seniors before the start of game two on Saturday.

 LAST TIME OUT              

  • The Spartans secured the 16-3 win over Davidson this past Tuesday at UNCG Baseball Stadium.  

  • The offense was led by Jacob Budzik who drove in five RBIs in the contest for the second straight game.  

  • Jake Mueller extended his on-base streak to 29 games.    
        

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS                 

  • The Spartans enter the series 17-28 overall, 3-12 in the SoCon and 8-15 in home games.         

  • In the past two games, the trio of Budzik, Mueller and Jacob Dilley have brought home a combined 16 RBIs.  

  • UNCG is nationally ranked in: triples (10th/15), triples per game (20th/ 0.33) and sacrifice flies (46th/23).       

  • Budzik leads the team and is tied for third in the SoCon in doubles with 16.      

  • Mueller leads the team in hits and RBIs, with 59 and 31, respectively.         

  • Freshman Tanner Berry has been hitting .370 with 40 hits, 25 RBIs and seven doubles since entering the lineup against Pittsburgh on Feb. 28.    

  • Since becoming a qualified hitter, Berry ranks 78th (fourth best as a catcher) in the nation in batting average (.370) and 124th in the country in on-base percentage (.470).   

  • Noah Chapman is one of the premier strikeout pitchers in the SoCon. He leads the team and is ranked third in the SoCon with 65 strikeouts.   

  • Chapman currently sits at 178 career strikeouts for UNCG.  

  • Out of the bullpen, Ayden West has been dominant with a 3.54 ERA in 20 appearances with 23 strikeouts.  

  • The Spartans were voted to finish fifth in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.                             

  • UNCG concluded the 2025 season with a 21-33 overall record and went 9-12 in SoCon play.                  

  • Head Coach Cody Ellis is in his third season at the helm of the Spartans, guiding them to a 71-82 record during his time.                  

               
SCOUTING THE KEYDETS   

  • VMI enters the series with a 27-17 overall record and is 3-9 in conference play.       

  • The Keydets most recently bested Longwood, 3-0, on Tuesday night. 

  • VMI ranks nationally in: stolen bases (2nd/ 164), stolen bases per game (2nd/ 3.37), shutouts (11th/ 5), hit by pitch (17th/ 97) and base on balls (28th/ 245).    

  • The Keydets boast the SoCon Preseason Player of the Year, Grayson Fitzwater, who holds national ranks in: bases on balls (10th/44), home runs (12th/18) and RBIs (21st/55)  

  • VMI has three players, Owen Prince, Cole Cook and Bradley Gardner, that have 20-plus stolen bases so far this season.  

  • The pitching staff is led by lefthander Hunter Sipe who has pitched in 60 innings with a 2.85 ERA and 52 strikeouts.  

  • Head Coach Sam Roberts continues his fourth season at the helm of the program with a 107-101 record.              

SERIES HISTORY VS. THE KEYDETS  
The Spartans lead the series 39-22 over the Keydets. UNCG took the last series matchup between the two, winning two-of-three in Lexington, Virginia, in 2025.
