Men's Soccer Falls To College of Charleston, 4-2

The UNCG men's soccer team fell, 4-2, to Southern Conference rival College of Charleston this evening at the Patriots Point Athletic Complex in Mt. Pleasant, SC. The Spartans fall to 5-4 on the season and 0-2 in SoCon action, while the Cougars improve to 5-4-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.

College of Charleston wasted little time in getting on the board as Tony Myers scored two goals in the game's first twenty minutes. His first goal came at the 4:49 mark and his next at the 19:26 mark off an assist from Ricardo Granados. Still in the first half, the Cougars extended their lead to an insurmountable 3-0 when Mark Gaskins scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Ben Hollingsworth at the 34:17 mark.

Trailing 3-0 entering the second stanza, Cliff Patterson (Sr./Jacksonville, NC) got the Spartans rolling as he scored his fifth goal of the season at the 50:44 mark. Chris Goos (Sr./Houston, TX) was credited with the assist, his fifth of the season. The Cougars thwarted any chances of a Spartan comeback as Tyler Beckstead scored his first goal of the season at 57:14. Myers picked up the assist for the Cougars.

At the 74:26 mark of the second half, Goos picked up his team-leading 11th goal of the season to set the final score, 4-2.

Charlie DeMello (Sr./Shreveport, LA) got the start in goal for the Spartans and recorded two saves in 68:13 of play. Joe Crump (Jr./Greensboro, NC) played the remainder of the game and picked up a save. Keith Wiggins went the distance in goal for the Cougars and recorded six saves in the game.

The Spartans will return to the field in one week when they travel to Virginia Tech on Tuesday, October 8. Kickoff is set for 7 pm Frank O. Moseley Field.
