STATESBORO, GA – Everett Teaford allowed no runs and scattered just three hits and struckout 10 in eight-plus innings on the hill as UNC Greensboro dropped game one of a three-game series with Georgia Southern, 4-0, Friday evening at J. I. Clements Stadium. 

Teaford (6-3) allowed just two Spartans to reach second base and one to reach third during his stint on the hill.  Jermaine Mitchell laced a two-out triple to centerfield in the top of the first, but was stranded there as Teaford struckout Guy Welsh to end the inning. 

David Cogswell came on and got the final three batters to earn his seventh save of the season.  Cogswell replaced Teaford after a rain delay halted play for approximately 45 minutes after the beginning of the ninth inning. 

UNCG (17-23, 6-7 SoCon) starting pitcher Nick Starnes (4-2), who allowed just three hits over five innings, suffered the loss after allowing three runs while striking out four batters. 

Griffin Benedict gave The Eagles a 1-0 lead after an inning of play with a single through the ride side that scored Chris Shehan who reached on a fielder's choice with one out. 

Georgia Southern (21-19, 8-5 SoCon) tacked on two more runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead.  Mike Economos opened the half inning with a walk and advanced to second on a groundout by Brett Pelfrey.  Chris Hollis then reached on an error on the Spartan infield, allowing Economos to score the second run of the game.  Hollis then stole second base and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Brian Pierce. 

The Eagles added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single through the ride side off the bat of Shehan.  Matt Miller reached base with a two-out double to centerfield before Shehan collected his 22nd RBI of the season. 

UNCG and Georgia Southern continue a three-game series Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. from J. I. Clements Stadium.
