CHAPEL HILL, NC – Despite holding an early 2-1 lead, the UNC Greensboro baseball team fell 6-2 to No. 1 North Carolina on Wednesday evening at Boshamer Stadium.
UNCG (7-8) opened up the game with back-to-back singles from Tim Carrier and Matt Gaski. Junior Greg Feltes followed with a RBI single to center and a RBI double from Guy Welsh gave the Spartans the 2-0 lead. The Tar Heels added a run of their own in the first off a Tim Federowicz double down the leftfield line to make it 2-1 UNCG.
North Carolina (17-1) tied the game at 2-2 with the help of two Spartan errors. Benji Johnson gave the Tar Heels the lead for good with a two RBI triple to deep left center. UNC tacked on another run in the fifth for the 5-2 lead.
The Tar Heels added another run in the eighth for the 6-2 lead. After allowing a runner to score, junior Clay Gibson retired three straight batters to close out the inning. North Carolina's Tyler Trice, however, pitched a scoreless ninth to secure the win.
Matt Danford (1-0) picked up the win after allowing only one hit and no runs in two innings on the mound. Rob Wooten tallied a game-high five strikeouts for North Carolina.
Senior Ryan Falcon (1-3) took the loss after allowing seven hits and five runs in 5-2/3 innings of work. The UNCG starter finished with three strikeouts.
Welsh finished with a RBI and went 3-for-5 to lead the Spartans from the plate.
UNCG enjoys a non-conference five-game homestand with Princeton and Cornell. The Spartans will play a three-game series with Princeton beginning Saturday and take on Cornell in a two-game series starting Tuesday.
