SPARTANBURG, SC Senior Guy Welsh and junior Greg Feltes each recorded a home run as UNC Greensboro cruised to the 8-1 victory over Wofford in game one of a three-game Southern Conference series on Friday night at Russell C. King Field.
Welsh went 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Feltes was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Ricky Orton and Sean Snell each finished with two hits and one RBI a piece.
Senior Ryan Falcon (4-6) picked up the win after giving up just one run on five hits in seven innings on the mound. The Rougemont, NC product recorded a game-high six strikeouts for UNCG. Sophomore Kory Judd put together two scoreless innings of relief for the Spartans.
Austin Redwine (4-3) took the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits in five innings of work.
UNCG (20-18, 7-6 SoCon) struck first and jumped out to the 3-0 lead in the fourth. Matt Gaski opened with an infield single and Welsh followed with a blast over the leftfield wall, his third roundtripper of the season. Two batters later, Snell sent a single up the middle to bring Orton in for the run.
Wofford (19-20, 3-10 SoCon) cut the Spartan lead, 3-1, in the same inning. Keith Munns hit a single to left to score Shane Kirkley, who singled earlier.
The Spartans responded and plated three more runs in the sixth, taking the 6-1 advantage. Welsh led off with a single and Feltes followed with his third homer of the year. Snell, the next batter, singled to short and was brought home when Corey Overholtzer laced a single down the leftfield line. UNCG added two more runs in the seventh, making it 8-1, on a RBI double from Feltes and a RBI single from Orton.
The two teams return to the diamond on Saturday for game two of the three-game series beginning at 1 pm.
