The 2,000 points / 1,000 rebounds club

DAVIDSON, NC On a night when Kyle Hines made basketball history, UNC Greensboro had just one field goal in a 13-minute span and saw a one-point game slip away as Davidson won its 28th straight Southern Conference game, 75-66, Tuesday night at Belk Arena.

Sophomore guard Stephen Curry led Davidson with 30 points, including 6-of-9 from three-point range. Andrew Lovedale added 14 points for the Wildcats (20-6, 18-0 SoCon).

On one of the tougher shooting nights the 6-6 senior from Sicklerville, NJ has had in his career, Hines became just the sixth player in NCAA basketball history to record 2,000 career points, 1,000 career rebounds and 300 career blocks joining David Robinson, Pervis Ellison, Alonzo Mourning, Tim Duncan, and Derrick Coleman. After finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds on Tuesday night, Hines now has 2,078 points and 1,004 rebounds in his career to go along with 327 blocks.

In front of an ESPN2 viewing audience, Hines also became the 96th player to record the 2,000-point, 1,000-rebound duo in NCAA history and just the sixth in the history of the Southern Conference since rebounding became a statistic in the early 1950s. No Southern Conference player had done the double since 1980 when Furman's Jonathan Moore did it. Hines also joined West Virginia great Jerry West on the list, whom he also passed on the SoCon's career field goal list in the process.

“It is a great accomplishment, but it comes under difficult circumstance,” said Hines, who also recorded his 44th career double-double and his 75th straight game scoring in double figures, the longest current streak in the nation. “It means a lot. I guess I am glad it is over just because we don't have to keep talking about it. I just want us to get back to our team goals try to win these last four games and get hot in time for the tournament and the NCAA Tournament. We've won four in a row; we've won six in a row; we can put together a run again, I think.”

Davidson's 28-game winning streak is the longest in Southern Conference history since West Virginia's 44-game winning streak in the late 1950's, of which the aforementioned Jerry West was a part of.

“Davidson is a great team,” said UNCG coach Mike Dement. “They are solid, there is no question about that. I am proud of the way my team kept fighting. We fought back and made runs. Down by 20, we got it back to six. But then we turned the ball over four straight possessions and we just can't do that when we are having to fight back like that.”

Mikko Koivisto added 12 points and Kendall Toney chipped with 11 points for UNCG (14-11, 8-8 SoCon), which lost for the fifth time in its last six games. The Spartans lost to Davidson for the second time in a week.

The Wildcats got off to a quick start without the benefit of Curry. Curry missed his first shot of the night, but Wildcats ran off to a 10-2 lead without him and forced UNCG into a quick timeout just four minutes in.

UNCG committed a season-high 23 turnovers in the game, topping its previous season-high of 20 against UT-Pan American in mid-November.

Davidson's lead hit 19-7 before the Spartans settled down. A 9-2 spurt got the Spartans back to within four at the midway point of the first half, capped off by a pair of Daniel Oliver free throws. Mikko Koivisto's trey with 8:45 left in the half brought the Spartans back to within one, 23-22.

But the Spartans closed the half going 1-for-7 with eight turnovers over the final 8:45 as Davidson cruised into the locker room with a 43-29 lead. In the process, Hines was held scoreless in the final 13:35 minutes of the half. In fact, he didn't even attempt a field goal 13:29 of the half.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Curry the first two field goals of the second half, despite being more than four minutes into the half ran the Davidson lead to 20, 49-29, as the UNCG drought continued.

Landon Celment's three-pointer with 15:10 to play final got the Spartans back into the field goal column. That sparked an 18-4 UNCG run as the Spartans hit seven of their next nine from the floor. UNCG got back to within 12, 51-39, when Davidson called a timeout with 13:14 to play.

But the Spartans weren't done. Consecutive traditional three-point plays by Hines brought UNCG to with 53-47. But Davidson scored eight straight, started by and capped off by Curry three-pointers as the Spartans turned the ball over in four straight possessions. In a matter of just two minutes, Davidson found itself with a 61-47 lead with 9:33 to play.

UNCG did not go away, still, however. The Spartans trailed by 12 with 3:43 left in a bucket by Ben Stywall. Hines connected on the first of two free throws with 2:50 left to make it 75-64, but then the well went dry again. Hines missed three straight free throws and a put back. Stywall got UNCG to within nine with 1:48 left. But Kevin Oleksiak missed a three-pointer with 1:10 remaining and Davidson was able to run out the remaining time.

UNCG plays its final road game of the regular season on Thursday night when it faces Western Carolina for the first time. Game time is set for 7 pm.

FREE THROWS: Talk about a February contrast. UNCG is now 10-19 over the last four seasons in the month of Feburary, including 2-11 away from Fleming Gym. On the flip side, Davidson is 30-3 in the month of February over the last five seasons with all three losses coming in February 2006... Davidson has now won 16 straight at Belk Arena and 40 of their last 42 home games against SoCon foes...
