CHARLESTON, SC – UNC Greensboro was once again a victim of the long ball as the College of Charleston claimed the series sweep with a 7-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Patriots Point Stadium.
College of Charleston (9-2, 3-0) starter David Peterson scattered seven hits through seven scoreless innings to pick up the win for the Cougars.
Ed Jayjack went 3-4 at the plate to lead the Spartans (1-8, 0-3) and starter Greg Smith collected the loss after allowing three earned runs.
The Cougars got the scoring started in the second inning when Joash Brodin led off the inning with a walk. After stealing second, Brodin scored on an Austin Morgan single through the left side to make the score 1-0.
Joey Bergman pushed the Cougar lead to 2-0 after he led off the second inning with a solo shot over the right field wall.
Cole Rakar hit the second home run of the day for the home squad after leading off the fifth inning with a solo home run to make the score 3-0.
College of Charleston plated two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to push their lead to 5-0 after another home run. Mike Hentz led off the inning with a single before Matt Mansilla hit his fourth home run of the weekend out to center field.
The Spartans eventually got on the board in the eighth inning thanks to back-to-back singles to begin the inning. Corey Overholtzer singled up the middle and Ray Quinones followed with a single to the right side to put runners on first and second. Overholtzer advanced to third after the Cougars turned a double play and scored the only run of the day on a Drew Gehringer double to center field to cut the Cougar lead to 5-1.
College of Charleston responded with two runs in the bottom half of the eighth to make the final score 7-1 thanks in part to another leadoff homerun, this time by Morgan.
UNCG will now have a few days off before taking on Old Dominion in a midweek battle. The Spartans and Monarchs will play at 2 p.m. at the UNCG Baseball Stadium in a nonconference tilt.
