CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 11 North Carolina scored five runs in the first three innings and never looked back as UNC Greensboro fell to the Tar Heels, 12-2, on Tuesday evening in Boshamer Stadium.
Garrett Davis recorded his first career win for the Tar Heels (4-0) after allowing two runs on just two hits and striking out a career-high five batters. Warren Slack was credited with the loss for the Spartans (3-1) after giving up one run on three hits in two innings of work.
Dillon Hazlett led the Heels at the plate as he went 3-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Seven other Tar Heels had at least one RBI in the game. Ed Jayjack hit a two-run home run to lead all UNCG hitters and was one of just three Spartans to record a hit.
The Tar Heels started the scoring in the bottom half of the first inning when Dillon Hazlett hit a two-out single through the left side to score Levi Michael to give UNC a 1-0 lead.
Jacob Stallings led off the bottom of the third inning with a double and later scored on a single to right field to give UNC a 2-0 lead. The Tar Heels would go on to score three more runs in the inning, highlighted by Brian Goodwin's two-RBI triple down the right field line to make it 5-0.
The Spartans were able to pull within 5-2 in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a blast by Jayjack. After Lloyd Enzor led off the inning with a walk, Jayjack took a 2-1 pitch well over the wall in right center for his second home run of the season.
The Tar Heels went on to add a run in the fourth inning on a two-out single by Michael. Tarron Robinson made it a 7-2 in the fifth inning with a solo blast to right field which was his first home run on the year.
UNC went on to add two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh and three runs in the eighth to make the final score 12-2.
The Spartans return to the diamond this weekend as they host Albany for a three-game series starting on Friday at 4 p.m.
