STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern scored at least one run in five of the first seven innings as the Eagles completed the series sweep of UNC Greensboro with a 12-0 win on Sunday at J.I. Clements Stadium.
Eagle starter Andy Moye was dominate the entire afternoon as he struck out a career-high 13 batters, while allowing no runs and just five hits in eight innings to pick up the win. Colby Hyatt was credited with the loss for the Spartans (11-12, 0-6 Southern Conference) after giving up six runs, four earned, on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Kyle Blackburn was the leader for the Eagles (14-11, 7-2 SoCon) by going 2-2 with five RBI and two home runs. Leadoff hitter Arthur Owens also had a nice day as he went 3-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Freshman Harry Slade continued his good run as he went 3-4 on the afternoon. Slade improved his average from .375 to .432 over the weekend series. Ray Quinones also had a solid afternoon by going 2-4 at the plate.
The Eagles got on the board early as they scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first. Owens led off the inning for Georgia Southern with a double down the right field line. Kevin Bowles followed with a single on a chopper that bounced over the head of the Spartan third baseman to put runners on the corners with no outs.
Blackburn then stepped to the plate and took a 1-1 pitch to right center that seemed destined for a home run, but Corey Overholtzer jumped over the wall and brought it back to limit the Eagles to a sacrifice fly. UNCG induced an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play to get out of the inning and keep the score at 1-0.
Georgia Southern added a pair of unearned runs with two outs in the bottom of the second to make it a 3-0 game. With runners on first and second, A fielding error by UNCG allowed one runner to score and Owens hit an RBI single to right field to give the Eagles a three-run advantage.
The Eagles continued to pour on the offense in the fourth inning as they stretched their lead to 6-0. Michael Burruss led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a walk to Shawn Payne. Roman Grimaldi then delivered an RBI single to center field on a hit and run to score Burruss.
In the sixth inning, Blackburn hit a one-out solo homer over the wall in right field to push the Eagle advantage to 7-0. Steve Cochrane hit a two-out double and then scored a batter later on an RBI single by Eric Phillips.
The Eagles capped off their scoring in the seventh inning by scoring four runs and making it a 12-0 game. Owens had an RBI single in the inning before Blackburn belted a three-run home run to right field, his second home run on the afternoon.
UNCG will continue with SoCon action on Tuesday as the Spartans host Davidson at 7 p.m. at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
