CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNC Greensboro senior forward Ben Stywall set a school record with his 15th double-double of the season, but it wasn't quite enough as the Spartans were knocked out of the Southern Conference Men's Basketball Tournament by Wofford, 59-47, in quarterfinal action Saturday afternoon.
Stywall finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds to break the single-season mark for double-doubles held by Kyle Hines. Stywall became the first player to average a double-double in school history, finishing the season at 14.3 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. He is the first player to do so in the SoCon since VMI's Eric Mann in 2000-01.
Freshman Kyle Randall added 10 points for the Spartans (8-23).
Wofford (24-8) had four players in double figures, led by Noah Dahlman's 13 points. Junior Salters added 12 points, all in the second half, and had two keys baskets down the stretch. The Terriers shot 51.2 percent from the floor for the game.
After the Spartans were locked in a defensive struggle for most of the day with Furman on Friday, both UNCG and Wofford came out cooking on Saturday. The Spartans knocked down four of their first five from the field, while Wofford hit its first six field goal attempts.
UNCG cooled off, going nearly six minutes without a field goal as Wofford scored 11 straight points to begin a 16-2 run to open up a 25-14 advantage with seven minutes remaining before the intermission. The Spartans missed 13 of 15 from the floor after the early start, but eventually Wofford cooled off, as well.
The Spartans were able to get back within six at the intermission, 28-22, but Wofford scored the first nine points of the second half to open up a 15-point advantage, capped off by Junior Salters' three-pointer.
The Spartans, holding Wofford without a field goal for more than eight minutes, got back to within eight at 45-37 with 10:01 to play after a pair of Pete Brown free throws to cap off a 10-2 run.
Two Randall free throws cut the margin to seven nearly five minutes later, 48-41. But Salters, as it seems he has done time and again against UNCG over the last four seasons, knocked down a huge three-pointer with 5:04 to play to push the margin back to 10.
With three minutes to go, UNCG got back to within seven again with the ball. But Evans missed a running in the lane and on the other end, it was Salters again, this time with a put-back, to extend the lead to 54-45 and end UNCG's hopes of a late rally.

FREE THROWS: Wofford has now beaten UNCG seven straight meetings. In five of those games, Salters had big baskets late in the game or in overtime to beat UNCG... Stywall finished the season with a single-season record 323 rebounds and 962 for his career, good for second all-time... the Spartans were just 1-for-12 from three-point range on the day... Stywall fouled out of a game for the first time since December 2007 when UNCG won at Fordham.
