DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson scored two early runs in the second inning and then tacked on three more in the fifth as UNCG fell to the Wildcats, 5-2, in the rubber game of the series on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field.
Davidson starter Ryan Overcash picked up the win for the Wildcats (16-15, 8-9 Southern Conference) after going 6 2/3 innings and giving up just three hits and one run, while striking out six. UNCG (17-13, 9-6 SoCon) starter Colby Hyatt was credited with the loss after yielding five runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Ray Quinones led UNCG at the plate as he went 1-2 with a solo home run and a walk and Trevor Edwards added an RBI single in the ninth inning.
Davidson was paced by Danny Weiss who had a two-run home run and Sam Payne and Michael Zeblo each added a pair of hits.
Zeblo got things started for the Wildcats in the second inning as he belted a one-out double in the right-center gap. After Daniel Gerow was hit by a pitch two batters later, Seth Freeman hit a double to left center. The throw back in sailed and went into the Davidson dugout to allow both runners to score and give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
The Spartans were able to get on the board in the top of the fifth as Quinones hit his first home run of the season just inside the left field foul pole to cut the Davidson lead down to 2-1.
Davidson had an answer, though, in the home half of the fifth with three more runs. Forrest Brandt led off the inning with a single and after a fly out, Weiss belted a home run to left center to make it a 4-1 contest. The Wildcats would add another run in the inning when Zeblo doubled down the right field line and scored when Payne singled to center field.
UNCG wasn't able to generate anymore offense until the ninth inning when Bobby Martin led off with a single up the middle. After stealing second, Martin was able to score on a single to right center by Edwards.
The Spartans return to the diamond on Tuesday as they host Wake Forest at 6 p.m.
