SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Warren Slack pitched six strong innings before making way to Jarett Miller who struck out seven of the nine batters he faced as UNCG defeated Wofford, 3-0, on Friday evening at Russell C. King Field.
Due to Elon's win over Furman and College of Charleston's loss to Samford on Friday, UNCG has locked up the No. 2 seed in next week's Southern Conference Tournament in Charleston, S.C. The Spartans will face Furman, the seventh seed, at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
Slack pushed his season record to 7-1 as he struck out seven batters and gave up just six hits in his six innings of work. Miller pitched the final three innings to pick up his third save of the year as he didn't allow a hit to go along with his seven strikeouts.
Cash Collins (8-4) was credited with the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings of work.
Ray Quinones, Drew Gehringer and Ray Crawford each had two hits to lead UNCG (32-18, 20-8 SoCon) and Crawford added an RBI. Cody Walker also had an RBI single for the Spartans.
Konstantine Diamaduros went 2-4 to lead the Terriers (22-31, 9-19 SoCon) and Mac Doyle also went 1-3 with a walk.
After neither team was able to plate a run early, it appeared as if the Terriers might get on the board first in the bottom of the third. With a runner on second and two outs, Doyle drew a walk to put two runners on base. Diamaduros followed with a single through the right side, but Gehringer threw a laser to home plate to easily beat the runner from second to end the inning.
The Spartans were finally able to break the deadlock in the top of the sixth thanks to some help. Gehringer led off with a single up the middle and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Trevor Edwards.
After Gehringer moved to third on a fly out to right, Cody Walker hit a chopper that was booted by the third baseman to allow Gehringer to score and give UNCG the 1-0 lead.
UNCG would add a pair of insurance runs in the top of the eighth to pad its lead to 3-0. With one out and a runner on first, Eric Brindle singled through the left side and Walker followed with a single of his own to score Edwards and make it 2-0.
After the Terriers made a pitching change, Ray Crawford took the first pitch he saw and put it off the wall in right field to score Brindle to give the Spartans a three-run lead.
Slack and Miller would combine to retire the final 12 Terriers in order to close out the game.
The Spartans will wrap up the regular season on Saturday as they play a doubleheader with the Terriers beginning at 2 p.m.
