GREENSBORO, N.C. -- UNCG women's cross country senior Shaina Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) has been named this week's Blue Chip Performer sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina. This is the second year that BCBSNC has sponsored the Blue Chip Performer award, which is chosen weekly from all sports in season and runs throughout the 2013-14 UNCG Athletics season.

Sumney, who redshirted all of last season, return to action this weekend at the fifth annual Elon Invitational and showed top form winning the individual title and leading the Spartans to the team championship. She posted a time of 17:36 in the 5,000-meter race to claim the title, edging out teammate Lydia Saina by three seconds.

Sumney, a First Team All-Southern Conference selection in 2011, helped the Spartans win the team title at the Elon Invitational, edging out the hosts by one point. UNCG picked up three of the top four finishers in the race with Sumney in first, Saina in second and Chelsea Sumney in fourth place.

Sumney and the cross country program return to action Sept. 28 as they travel to Charlottesville, Va., for the Panorama Farms Invitational.
