Women's Basketball Falls to LSU at Miami Holiday Tournament

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The UNCG women's basketball dropped a non-conference game to SEC foe LSU, 82-61, Sunday afternoon at the Bank United Center.

The Spartans fall to 5-8 on the season while LSU improves to 6-5 with the victory. UNCG shot 35.6 percent from the field  (21-of-59) but hit nine three pointers (9-of-20) for the game.

The Tigers used a significant margin in rebounding grabbing 53, including 26 offensive boards while the Spartans had 33 total rebounds (15 offensive). LSU also held a 42-to-22 lead in points in the paint and outscored UNCG 48-to-24 in bench points.

The Blue and Gold did come away with 13 steals in the game as sophomore India Timpton (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) led the team with three swipes. UNCG had three players in double figures with junior guard Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) leading the way with 18 points (6-for-18), five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Senior Jarae Savage (Marietta, Ga./North Cobb) added 12 points off the bench on 4-of-8 shooting with two rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Shanese Harris (Chesapeake, Va/Western Branch) scored 13 points on 4-of-11 from the field and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

The Tigers opened up its largest lead of the game in the second half after three-straight layups to make the score 44-30 just three minutes into the period.

With 11 minutes left, UNCG cut the lead to just 10 at 54-44 off a three-pointer from Mason. LSU would continue to push the pace outscoring the Spartans 47-35 in the second stanza to hold on to the 21-point victory.

LSU took a 35-26 halftime lead as Savage led the team with eight first-half points. Mason added six points off two three pointers.

The Tigers jumped out to an 8-0 lead early on just four minutes into the half. UNCG would get back into the game thanks to a 14-9 run off a jumper from sophomore Jade Scaife (Fort Washington, Md./Archbishop Spalding) making the score 17-14 LSU.

The next five minutes LSU would push its lead to 12 points after a 16-7 spurt with 3:48 remaining in the period. UNCG would end the half on a 5-0 run to get within nine points by intermission thanks to a strong shooting performance from three point land going 4-of-6.

The Blue and Gold return to face FAMU Monday, Dec. 29 at 1 p.m. at the Bank United Center in the final game of the Miami Holiday Tournament.
