Goss Drives in Five in Win over High Point

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the second day in a row, all nine starters for the UNCG baseball team collected at least one hit.  The Spartans handily defeated the High Point Panthers, 13-5 at the UNCG Baseball Stadium to improve to 2-0 on the young season.  High Point falls to 0-2.  Michael Goss (Cartersville, Ga./Chattanooga St.) earned his second multiple hit game of his Spartan career, en route to knocking in a game-high five RBI.  Of Goss' three hits, two were for extra bases, recording a double in the first inning, and his first home run as a Spartan in the fourth inning.

"I'm really proud of our guys." Head Coach Link Jarrett said, "That was one of the finest games I've seen.  When you look at how complete it was.  We defended well, pitched well and offensively you bang some balls, have a timely bunt single and you run the bases well, that's a good recipe for anybody.  High Point is good, they have really good arms and some athletic position guys, that's a very good win over a very good team."

Along with Goss, four Spartans had multiple hit games.  Tripp Shelton (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) and Andrew Moritz (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) had three hits each, with L.J. Kalawaia (Wailuku, Hawai'i/Ohlone College), and Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC) collecting two apiece.

Jake Kusz (Durham, N.C./Riverside), Ryne Sigmon (Danville, Va./Danville CC) and Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) all added a hit, along with Collin Woody (Tampa, Fla./College of Central Florida) and Dillon Stewart (Dunn. N.C./Brunswick CC) making the most of their hits, belting some of the first home runs of the season.

On the mound, Bryce Hensley (Ashville, N.C./Catawba Valley CC) sparkled in his debut for UNCG.  The redshirt sophomore earned the win after throwing 6.0 ininngs, allowing five hits, and an earned run.  Hensley also struck out five hitters in his quality start.

Jake Lewis (Wendell, N.C./Corinth Holders), Ben Kerner (Cary, N.C./Brunswick CC) and Easton Welch (Randleman, N.C./Randleman) also made their debuts on the mound.  Lewis gave up one hit in the seventh inning. Kerner surrendered two hits and two runs in the eighth and Welch finished off the ninth striking out two hitters.

The Spartans took an early lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Kalawaia started the game off with a single back through the box.  Shelton followed with a sinking liner to left that dropped in front of the left fielder to go for a double.  Goss belted a double off the wall in right to bring in two and give UNCG an early lead.  Woody earned a walk, and moved to second on a passed ball.  After Goss was thrown out at third, Sigmon singled through the right side to bring in Woody and give the Spartans a 3-0 lead at the end of one inning.

After the Panthers got a run back in the third on a bases loaded hit by pitch.  The Spartans responded by scoring three in their half of the inning, highlighted by the Woody home run.

UNCG added a pair of runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings before High Point was able to get back on the board in the eighth.

The Spartans got another run in the bottom of the eighth.  The freshman, Trejo, made his debut at the dish, rocking a double to right before scoring on a Moritz groundout.

UNCG returns to action tomorrow, looking for the sweep of the Panthers.  Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Willard Stadium on High Point's campus.
