Baseball Welcomes Former SoCon-Rival Elon for Midweek Matchup

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG baseball, fresh off a three-game sweep over Maryland Eastern Shore will host former Southern Conference-rival Elon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium on Tuesday evening. The Spartans enter the midweek tilt with a 5-6 overall record, while the Elon Phoenix currently sit at 6-6 this season. Elon is coming off of a three-game sweep over UMASS last weekend.

Pitching Matchup

UNCG – RHP Dan Loats (0-2, 11.05 ERA, 7.1 IP, 5 Ks) vs. RHP George Kirby (0-1, 2.31 ERA, 11.2 IP, 6 Ks)

The Spartans come in having taken three games from Maryland Eastern Shore over the weekend.  UNCG earned 11-3, 4-2, and 18-4 victories over the Hawks. Dan Loats (Eden Prairie, Minn./NIACC) will start his third midweek contest of the season.  In Loats' previous outing against NC State, the junior logged 5.0 innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs to the No. 6 NC State Wolfpack.

UNCG's bats woke up in the series finale with the Hawks. UNCG tallied 20 hits, scoring a season-best 18 runs in the finale.  Caleb Webster (Randleman, N.C./Randleman) got his first career start at shortstop Sunday afternoon.  The freshman responded, going 5-for-5, with two doubles, four RBI and a run scored. Andrew Moritz (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) is currently riding a seven-game hit streak, and has had multi-hit performances four times in the streak.  Moritz has reached base in all but one game this season.  In just his sophomore season, Moritz has reached base safely in 50 of 52 career games. Ryan Clinch (Jamestown, N.C./Brunswick CC), Dillon Stewart (Dunn, N.C./Brunswick CC) and Michael Goss (Cartersville, Ga./Chattanooga State CC) have all tallied a pair of home runs.

Among everyday players for the Phoenix, Zach Evers leads the team with a .283 average.  Evers has hit two doubles and three home runs to go with four RBI this season.  The three home runs is best on the team.  Joe Satterfield has started six games, playing in a total of eight.  The freshman infielder is currently on a four-game hit streak, recording multiple hits in each contest of the streak.  Eight different Phoenix have hit home runs this season, with Evers being the only player with multiple long balls. 

George Kirby will get the start tomorrow evening.  Kirby will be working in his fourth game, making his first start.  He has logged 11.2 innings, with his longest outing coming against Longwood in the season opening series.  He also worked 4.1 innings in relief at East Carolina last week.  He has earned six strikeouts while surrendering three earned runs.  Danny Crowe has been the most frequently used arm out of the Elon bullpen. Crowe has worked 10.0 innings in six games.  He has struck out 10 batters while holding opponents to a .094 average against.  Sean Byrnes and Derek Pike have worked in four games each without allowing an earned run. 

First pitch between UNCG and Elon will be at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
