GREENSBORO, N.C. – With increasing determination and confidence, the dynamite defense of the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team became more aggressive and relentless during its victory over Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon.
Holding Norfolk State to five baskets, 20 points and 23 percent shooting in the second half was a welcomed sight for UNCG head coach
Wes Miller.
The Spartans had allowed 80 or more points in consecutive setbacks to Duquesne and Coppin State. For Miller, reviewing those game films was like watching the movie "Saw" on an endless loop.
Fortunately for Miller, his squad returned to form and limited Norfolk State to 39 fewer points than they allowed in their road loss to Coppin State.
Now, the Spartans are looking to keep the momentum going when they host winless USC Upstate to conclude a quick two-game homestand Tuesday at 7 p.m.
UNCG has become of the nation's elite programs because of its defensive tenacity. Through four games, the Spartans had displayed flashes but nothing consistent. For 20 minutes, Norfolk State had difficulty running its offense. UNCG players tipped balls, dove across the floor, and dominated the rebounding battle winning it, 47-34.
UNCG had balanced scoring led by
Isaiah Miller's 17 points and
Kaleb Hunter's third career double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds).
Khyre Thompson enjoyed his second straight double digit outing with 12 points.
Mohammed Abdulsalam was a tower of power with nine points and six rebounds.
Isaiah Miller leads the Southern Conference in steals per game (2.4), is second in scoring (21.7), and third in assists per game (4.2). His 48.9 shooting percentage is 11th in the conference.
Hayden Koval leads the SoCon and is fifth nationally in blocked shots per game (3.4).
Kaleb Hunter leads the conference in offensive rebounding (4.0) and is 11th in overall rebounding (6.2).
As a team, UNCG is fifth nationally in offensive rebounds per game (16.8).
Don't be deceived by Upstate's record. Three of their losses were to Furman and Winthrop.
The visiting Spartans had a rough weekend as they lost Big South Conference contests to Winthrop by a combined 48 points. Upstate lost 107-77 to Winthrop on Sunday despite 21 points from Tommy Bruner and 20 from Bryson Mozone. He made five 3-pointers.
For the season, Bruner is one of three double-digit scorers for Upstate, leading the team with a 14.8 point per game average. Mozone (18 3-pointers) is scoring at a 13.5 point per game clip. Everette Hammond has added 10.8 points per game. Bruner and Dalvin White have combined for 53 assists.
UNCG finishes its non-conference slate with two more games on the road beginning with Elon on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 1 p.m.
