UNCGÂ / Coppin State |
GREENSBORO, N.C. – In this the most unusual of basketball seasons, the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team was blessed to play three times during its 10 days in Louisville.
Â
The Spartans had two games get cancelled in the beautiful city that sits along the Ohio River, forcing the UNCG coaching staff to spend time working feverishly to find a pair of quality opponents that will continue to test its talented squad.
Â
Mission accomplished.
Â
Ranked 21st in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major top 25 poll, the Spartans (1-2 overall) added Coppin State and Norfolk State to their 2020-21 schedule this week. The Spartans make the trip to Baltimore to meet Coppin State in their first road contest of the season.
Â
Don't be deceived by Coppin State's 0-4 record. The Eagles are a solid team with strong guards who spent the last four days shuttling up and down Interstate 95 like a long-distance Uber driver between Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia.
Â
Coppin State's losses were to Duke, George Washington, Drexel, and Georgetown. This will be the Eagles' fourth game in six days.
Â
Meanwhile, this will be UNCG's first game in eight days. The Spartans have been off since dropping an 81-68 decision to Duquesne in the Louisville Multi-Team Event on Dec. 2.
Â
The Spartans will bring to Charm City one of the nation's most dynamic and explosive performers in senior guard
Isaiah Miller, the SoCon Preseason Player of the Year who was named to the Wade Houston All-Tournament Team and Lou Henson Award preseason watch list.
Â
While his 21.7 point per game scoring average is great and second in the conference, Miller's defense is even better.
Â
Sticking to defenders like Old Bay seasoning on crabs, Miller leads the SoCon in steals per game. With 550 career steals, Miller is second among active leaders in the NCAA. He has at least two steals in two of the Spartans' three games this season.
Â
UNCG is far from a one-man show.
Â
Freshman
A.J. McGinnis made his first college basketball game one to remember, tallying 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting from 3-point distance against Duquesne. In nearly 16 minutes of action against Winthrop,
Khyre Thompson set what will be the many of career best performances when he had six rebounds and six steals.
Â
Hayden Koval's seven blocked shots against Little Rock were the second most in program history in a single game. He leads the nation in blocked shots, averaging 4.33 per game. He has 13 blocked shots in three games.
Â
Angelo Allegri has made nine 3-pointers, which is sixth in the Southern Conference. He is eighth in field goal percentage (45.0 percent).
Kaleb Hunter leads the SoCon in offensive rebounding.
Â
Coppin State, on the other hand, loves the 3-point shot. The Eagles have attempted at least 35 3-pointers in three of their four games. Coppin State has made 24.3 percent of its shots from deep (33-for-136). The Eagles also force 20.3 turnovers per game.
Â
The Eagles top scorers have been Anthony Tarke (15.8 points per game), Dejuan Clayton (13.7 points per game), and Koby Thomas (11.0). Clayton didn't play against Georgetown and his status for this contest is unknown.
