GREENSBORO, N.C. – Saturday's rare late afternoon showdown between UNC Greensboro (UNCG) and Vermont offers a classic conflict between two elite men's basketball programs.
In the famous words of D.J. Khaled, all the Spartans and Catamounts have done since 2016 is win. These titans are accustomed to success as evidenced by the combined total of 253 victories, nine seasons of 20 or more wins, four NCAA Tournament appearances, & three NIT trips between these two proud programs over that span.
UNCG and Vermont are the gold standards in their respective leagues, Southern Conference and America East. Two years ago, in Burlington on the shores of Lake Champlain, the Spartans edged the Catamounts, 54-53.
Expect more of the same Saturday as they each enter this national blockbuster with identical 5-2 records. Both Vermont and UNCG pride themselves on tough, hard-nosed defense. It's the foundation of success for each squad. They attack their opponents like a swarm of angry bees.
Vermont allows 57.7 points per game while UNCG is giving up 65.1 points per outing.
Even though points promise to be at a premium, it will be beautiful to witness.
