UNCG Baseball Rematches With Elon

GREENSBORO, N.C.  – UNCG baseball continues to win by any means necessary in 2021, posting its sixth win of the season this Tuesday against (RV) Charlotte, thanks in part to an 8th inning grand slam from Hogan Windish. The Spartans look to continue their winning ways against Elon this weekend, facing the Phoenix for a second series after UNCG's originally scheduled opponent, Bryant, was forced to drop out of competition.

This weekend with the Phoenix will be split between Latham Park and UNCG Baseball Stadium. Elon will play host on Friday and Sunday, while the Spartans enjoy their fifth game playing at their home park on Saturday.

The Spartans win over the 49ers was Charlotte's first loss of the season, as UNCG's current 6-2 record stands as the fourth-best of any Division I program in the state. The 49ers (6-1), North Carolina (6-1) and UNCW (5-1) all have better records on win-percentage, however none of those three squads is yet to play an eighth game in 2021.

HOW'S THEIR FORM?
-- UNCG has won six of their last seven since opening the season with a 7-4 loss to Elon. The Spartans most recently defeated (RV) Charlotte in the midweek and are yet to lose a weekend series this year
-- Elon won its most recent series against visiting Virginia Commonwealth, both of their wins against the Rams were walk-off victories. They did not play in the midweek

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
-- Second baseman Hogan Windish helped clinch the Spartans' victory on Tuesday hitting a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the eighth. Windish leads the Spartans with three homers on the year, while only 20 players in the country have more taters in 2021
-- A number of Spartans are ranked in the top-10 nationally for various statistics this season. Brandon Stephens is tied with 109 other Division I pitchers for a league-best 0.00 ERA, Corey Rosier is in a four-way tie for most triples (3), Kross Robinson's three saves are second in the country, only three other arms in D1 baseball have more appearances than Jack Voigt (5), Greg Hardison's pair of sac flies sit fifth overall and Josh Madole's 10 walks rank seventh in the nation
-- Only seven teams in the country have drawn more walks than UNCG's 55 on the year so far, while the team's five combined triples are second in the country. The Spartans are 3-1 when hitting one or more triples this season, and 4-1 when drawing seven or more walks

SCOUTING ELON
-- Elon's pitching staff has been in midseason form to start 2021, with its 2.80 ERA standing second in the CAA and 32nd in Division I baseball. While giving up just 19 earned runs on the season however, the Phoenix defense has surrendered an additional 17 unearned while making 14 errors in seven matchups
-- Sophomore outfielder Anthony Galason delivered the Phoenix' walk-off knock in both of their wins against VCU over the weekend. His four doubles are the top mark in the CAA and rank 20th in Division I baseball. He leads Elon with a .667 slugging percentage

SERIES HISTORY
-- UNCG holds a 23-37 record against Elon overall, but won the pair's season opening series earlier this year, and won both of their midweek meetings in 2019
-- The Spartans are 8-3 against the Phoenix since the 2016 campaign, and 6-2 when those games have been played inside UNCG Baseball Stadium
