UNCG Hosts Key SoCon Series Against The Citadel

GREENSBORO, N.C.  – UNCG baseball will hope their Tuesday performance against North Carolina A&T will carry over into the weekend, with the Spartans hosting The Citadel for a three-game series at UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Spartans completed the season sweep of the Aggies with an 8-2 win at First National Bank Field during the midweek, taking home this year's "Battle for the 'Boro" series title. They face a Bulldogs' squad that has found a rhythm over the past week, having defeated ETSU two games to one in their most recent SoCon series.

*There was a slight change made to the series schedule earlier in the week, in order to avoid some incoming inclement weather. The Spartans and Bulldogs will now open the weekend with a Friday doubleheader to start at 1 p.m., while the series finale will take place at noon on Saturday.

HOW'S THEIR FORM?
-- UNCG is coming off their second straight midweek victory after defeating crosstown rival North Carolina A&T 8-2 at First National Bank Field. That win gives the Spartans the sweep in this year's "Battle for the 'Boro" series, the first time either side has gone 2-0 in the rivalry since UNCG swept the Aggies in 2014
-- The Citadel has just 11 wins on the season, but they might be playing their best ball of the year so far, having won three of their last five contests. The Bulldogs took two of three in their series against ETSU, after defeating Jacksonville in 11 innings in the midweek

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
-- Hogan Windish and Corey Rosier hold on base streaks of 11 and nine respectively. Windish has hit in five of his last six games, averaging .375 with five walks in those last six appearances
-- Greg Hardison became the second player on the current Spartan roster to reach 100 career starts in blue and gold this Tuesday. He trails only teammate Josh Madole (158) for the most starts among current Spartans. Madole broke the century mark back in his sophomore season, in 2019
-- Right hander Jake Wolf tossed a perfect 1.1 innings against A&T on Tuesday. While the righty only has 2.1 IP on the year he is yet to allow a baserunner in 2021 and has struck out four of the seven batters he's faced
-- Hardison became the seventh player on the Spartan roster to hit a triple in 2021 during UNCG's win over the Aggies. The club's 11 as a team this spring is the most in the Southern Conference and ranks 17th in the country

SCOUTING THE CITADEL
-- Hitting hasn't been a problem for the Bulldogs in 2021, with three players averaging over .300 and six players hitting at or above the Mendoza line. The Citadel offense is led by outfielder Ryan McCarthy, who is slashing .311/.406/.563 on the year with 22 RBI and six home runs
-- Righty Chase Cooper is making a case for a SoCon All-Freshman nomination, with the first-year Bulldog holding a 3.22 ERA over 16 appearances and 22.1 IP. He's struck out 21 batters in 2021, and has given up just two extra-base knocks on the year

SERIES HISTORY
-- The winner of this week's series will own the all-time record between UNCG and The Citadel, with the Spartans holding a 37-36 record against the Bulldogs
-- The Spartans are currently on an eight-game winning streak against The Citadel, with the latter going without a win against UNCG since 2017. The Bulldogs have not won a series against the Spartans since 2014, when they swept UNCG in a series in Charleston
