GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro volleyball squad won its lone exhibition match against the ECU Pirates on Friday night.
The Spartans won the match 3-1 before both coaches agreed to play a fifth set so the freshman could get more playing time.
Head coach
Corey Carlin was nothing but proud of his team.
"Our number one goal in the preseason and especially this preseason was to stay assertive," said Carlin. "That was a real issue with the team last year and we saw that. Now we had too many hitting and serving errors in the second set. We have to still attack the court and have to understand how to channel that assertiveness so that we play a little bit cleaner. Other than the second set, I was really proud of the performance we had."
The entire team played a huge role in the win over the Pirates.
Freshman
Jocelyn Carter led the team with 14 kills and a .385 hitting percentage.
Kayla White, a graduate transfer, followed with 12 kills. White was also the lone Spartan to register two solo blocks.
The Spartans served up eight aces. Two of those aces came from senior
Stephanie Meysembourg.
"I think we had a lot of individual performances tonight that really helped us get into a rhythm, said Carlin. "In the third and fourth set I thought our serving was very assertive. We had big runs with Stephanie [Meysembourg] and Valeria [Calderon] with their serves."
"I think those were key pieces in the third and fourth set. I think Jenna [Wiggs] did a really nice job in the libero spot having some consistency, particular in her passing. I was really impressed with our freshman. I think our freshman, with their first college experience, all did good things and showed good things on film. "
UNCG will start their regular season next weekend at the Appalachian State Tournament. They will face Radford, Eastern Kentucky, and host Appalachian State.
The excitement of the regular season can be felt by everyone.
"Oh we're thrilled!" said Carlin. "We had a really intense preseason. We came out of it healthy, which is great. To have options and people pushing from the bench and the depth we have, I think we are going to get off to a good start."
