UNCG Ready for Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, GA. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team will represent the Southern Conference in the 2022 NCAA Baseball Tournament with its first matchup against former SoCon member, No. 16 Georgia Southern this Friday at 7 p.m. in the Statesboro Regional.
 
The Spartans are joined in the Statesboro Regional by No. 22 Texas Tech and No. 17 Notre Dame. The Spartans enter the Regional as the underdog and have played the most games. UNCG has played 62 games this season, followed by Georgia Southern with 58, Texas Tech with 57, and Notre Dame with 49.
 
In the regional, the Spartans earned the No. 4 seed, while hosts Georgia Southern earned the No. 1 seed. Texas Tech is the No. 3 seed and Notre Dame is the No. 2 seed.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
-- Last weekend, Kennedy Jones and Pres Cavenaugh set single-season records.
--Jones is now the new single-season RBI leader with 73 and the total base leader with 148.
--Cavenaugh is tied for first in at-bats with 260.
--The Spartan bats are hot coming into the 2022 NCAA Regional Tournament, outscoring their last three opponents 46-11.
 
ALL-AMERICANS
--Hogan Windish and Alex Hoppe were recently named to this year's Collegiate Baseball All-American Team.
--Windish was named a Second Team All-American second baseman, while Hoppe was named a Third Team All-American pitcher.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
--The Spartans had six players named to the SoCon All-Tournament Team, the most of any team.
--Price King, Dallas Callahan, Greg Hardison, Zack Budzik, Pres Cavenaugh, and Kennedy Jones earned the honor.
--Jones was also named the Walt Nadzak Most Outstanding Player. He finished the tournament with a .432 batting average, 10 runs, 16 hits, five home runs, and 17 RBIs.
--He set tournament records in hits, RBIs, 37 at-bats, and 33 total bases. His five home runs matched a tournament record.
--King pitched 8.0 innings and struck out seven while having a 0.00 ERA.
--Callahan led the team in doubles with five and had 45 putouts. He also caught six games in three days.
--Hardison finished with a .357 average, 10 hits, five RBIs, and 55 putouts.
--Budzik had a .407 average with 10 runs, 11 hits, four doubles, and eight RBIs.
--Cavenaugh led the team with a .441 batting average, seven runs, 15 hits, and nine RBIs.
--Five of his RBIs came off a grand slam and a walk-off double.
 
PINNACLE AWARD
--Senior Alex Hoppe was presented with this year's Southern Conference Pinnacle Award.
--The award is given to a student-athlete on the championship team that has the highest GPA.
 
POSTSEASON AWARDS
--The Spartans had six players earn spots on the SoCon Coaches and Media All-Conference teams.
--Hogan Windish was named the coaches Player of the Year, while Alex Hoppe was named the unanimous Pitcher of the Year.
--Windish and Hoppe also earned spots on the first team as well.
--Austin Parsley, Mitchell Smith, Pres Cavenaugh, and Kennedy Jones were named to the All-SoCon Second Team.
--Jones was named to the All-Freshman Team.
 
GOING THE DISTANCE
--RHP Austin Parsley pitched a complete game in game one on Sunday. It was his third complete game this season.
--LHP Jared Mathewson and RHP Hunter Shuey have also pitched a complete game this year.
--Mathewson's came on May 8 against VMI.
--Shuey's was game two on Sunday in seven innings.
