GREENSBORO, NC - The UNC Greensboro volleyball team defeated Chattanooga, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in Fleming Gymnasium. After being swept by Chattanooga in the first meeting of the year, the Spartans returned the favor by winning in straight sets with scores of 30-25, 30-19, and 30-25. With the win the Spartans move to 5-21 overall and 3-11 in the Southern Conference, just one game behind Chattanooga for eighth place in the conference. The Lady Mocs fall to 7-17 on the year and 4-10 in the SoCon.
UNCG opened game one with a 5-3 lead behind strong play from Dawn Bright (Sr./Aberdeen, NC) and Kim Dayton (Jr./Fayetteville, NC). Chattanooga answered with a kill from Kari Krause to close the gap to one, 5-4. However, UNCG rallied with a run of it's own. A kill by Dayton pushed the Spartan lead to 23-19, but a kill by Chattanooga's Kelley Smith ended the Spartan rally. The Mocs then rattled off four consecutive points behind the stong serves of Kari Krause. The Spartans, however, limited Krause to just one serving ace and regained the lead at 26-25. LaJean Morrow (Jr./Asheville, NC) finished off the Mocs with back-to-back kills, giving UNCG the game one win, 30-25.
Chattanooga regrouped in game two opening with a 3-1 lead. The lead was short lived, however, as a kill by Holly Long (So./Richmond, VA) tied the game at 6-6. UNCG then tacked on two more points following two consecutive assisted blocks by Holly Long, LaJean Morrow, and Kim Dayton. Adrian Hicks (Fr./Morganton, NC) extended the lead to six, 18-12, following her first kill of the match. Morrow once again ending Chattanooga's chances of a comeback with a kill to put UNCG ahead, 28-19, en route to the game two victory, 30-19.
The Spartans dominated early in game three, as an ace by Lori Collins (Fr./Keeling, VA) put the Spartans ahead, 10-3. UNCG contined to roll pushing the lead to as many as 11 points, 21-10, but Chattanooga mounted a late comeback closing the gap to five, 29-25. UNCG's Kim Dayton silenced the Chattanooga rally with a kill to give UNCG the game, 30-25, and the match, 3-0.
LaJean Morrow, Lori Collins, and Kim Dayton all recorded 12 kills to lead the Spartans. Claire Jackson (Fr./Richmond, VA) led the Spartan defense with 16 digs. Dawn Bright added eight kills, eight digs, and three blocks. Adrian Hicks paced the Spartans with 45 assists.
Chattanooga was led by Jody Steinberger's 10 kills. Lindsey Galloway recorded a game-high 21 digs. Kari Krouse added three kills and 12 digs, while Kelley Smith tallied eight kills and three digs.
UNCG will return to action on November 1 to host The Citadel at 7 pm.
