GREENSBORO, NC – Freshman Alex Shelton earned his first collegiate win after allowing just one run on six hits and collecting a game-high four strikeouts in 5-2/3 innings of work as UNC Greensboro defeated Princeton 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Sophomore Clinton McKinney earned his first save of the year after 3-1/3 innings on the mound. The Greenville, SC product struck out three batters and did not give up a run or hit while on the hill.
Princeton's Steven Miller took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits with two strikeouts in five innings on the mound. Reliever Michael Zaret allowed three hits in three innings of work for the Tigers.
Tim Carrier and Matt Gaski each finished 2-for-3 to lead the Spartans behind the plate. Gaski recorded a RBI and Carrier finished with two runs scored.
UNCG (9-8) picked up a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead on a RBI from Gaski. Carrier led off the inning by singling down the leftfield line. Gaski drove home the run with a double to center.
Princeton (1-7) got on the board in the third RBI from Sal Iacono. Shortstop Greg Van Horn opened the inning with a single to left and reached third on a groundout and wild pitch. Iacono's double to left center allowed Van Horn to come home and tie the game, 1-1.
Junior Greg Feltes gave the Spartans the lead after bringing Carrier home on a sacrifice fly to centerfield. With the 2-1 lead going into the sixth, UNCG's pitching staff did not allow a Princeton run or hit to close out the game.
UNCG and Princeton finish the three-game series on Monday beginning at 6 pm.
