CHARLESTON, SC With a two-run homer by Cory Harrilchak in the first inning of the semifinal round, UNC Greensboro was eliminated from the 2008 Southern Conference Baseball Tournament. The Phoenix homered in the first, second, and fourth innings to lead their way to a 12-4 victory over UNCG at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The loss marked the second time in two years that the Spartans have been knocked out of the tournament by Elon (42-16) in their fourth game. UNCG finishes the 2008 season with an overall 33-27 record and a 15-12 mark in the conference.

Elon's Kenneth Ferrer (4-3) was credited with the win after 6.0 innings of work with seven strikeouts. While on the mound he gave up just three runs off of seven hits. Jimmy Reyes earned his first save of the season after coming in for relief in the seventh. While on the hill he held UNCG to just one run on four hits. Spartan starter junior Greg Martin (7-4) was tabbed with the loss after giving up seven runs on six hits. Freshman reliever Warren Slack led UNCG with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.

At the plate, UNCG was led by Matt Gaski who finished the evening 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Tim Carrier was 3-for-5 with a double, a pair of RBI, and a run. For the Phoenix, Chase Austin was 4-for-5 with four RBI, and a double. Cory Harrilchak hit 3-for-6 with two runs, a pair of RBI, and a home run.

Adam Deleo finished his career with an 11-game hit streak and Corey Overholtzer will move into next season with a nine-game clip.

First pitch of the game went off at 2:40pm as junior Greg Martin blew a fastball past Elon's leadoff batter, Chris Dove. Less than 30 seconds later, redshirt sophomore Ed Jackjack snatched a line drive out of the air to notch UNCG's first out of the afternoon. Three bats later, the Phoenix took a two-run lead as Bennett Davis homered to left center to bring in Dallas Tarleton from first.

Mike Lobacz led off the second with a right field solo to give Elon the 3-0 advantage. A bases loaded walk pushed them to 4-0 before Chase Austin doubled off of the left field wall to bring in two and give the Phoenix the 6-0 lead. With Austin's two RBI, Elon tied the SoCon record 43 tournament RBI.

With two away in the home half of the second, consecutive walks in the seven, eight, and nine spot brought in UNCG's first run of the game. Seventeen pitches moved junior Pedro Leon, Jayjack, and freshman Ray Quinones to eventually bring senior Tim Carrier in from third for UNCG's 441st run of the season and their 36th run of the tournament.

The Spartans chipped away another run in the third on a single by Carrier. Gaski led off the inning with a left field double. After two consecutive strikeouts, Carrier drove a 1-1 pitch up the middle to plate Gaski and put the score at 7-2. Gaski's double was 130th of the season. UNCG broke the record on May 22 as senior Sean Snell led off Game 10 against Wofford with a two-bagger down the left field line. The previous record of 123 was set during the 1997 season.

Sophomore Corey Overholtzer led off the sixth inning with a right side single and was later plated on a sacrifice fly by Ray Quinones. (SoCon Photos)

The Phoenix pulled away even further with a three spot in the fourth sparked by a lead off solo to right field by Cory Harrilchak. Two more were driven in on a left field line double by Chase Austin and a left field single by pinch hitter Greg Annarummo. Elon tallied another in the sixth on a UNCG throwing error. Harrilchak's solo gave Elon their 44th RB I of the tournament and set a new SoCon standard.

Once again, UNCG chipped one away in the bottom half of the inning. A pair of singles to the right side by Overeholtzer and Leon put runners on first and second and in the next at-bat, both were moved on a fly out to left field. Overholtzer scored UNCG's third run of the game as Quinones sent a sacrifice fly into centerfield.

The Phoenix took back the nine-run lead in the top of seven on a single through the right side by Harrilchak. Harry Austin was plated on the Harrilchak single after he reached on a walk, stole second, and then took third on a groundout to first base.

Down 12-3, Gaski tallied another run for the blue and gold in the ninth on a double to left center by Carrier. The one run wasn't enough as UNCG fell to Elon, 12-4 in Game 12 of the 2008 SoCon Tournament.
