GREENSBORO, NC – Junior Greg Feltes went 3-for-3 with two RBI and junior Matt Gaski finished 3-for-4 with a RBI to lead UNC Greensboro to the 12-6 victory over cross-town rival North Carolina A&T on Tuesday evening at First Horizon Park in downtown Greensboro.
The Spartans were also led by senior Guy Welsh and junior Scott Schneider, who each recorded two hits on the night.
Junior Clay Gibson (2-0) earned the win after scattering just two hits and allowing one run in 2-2/3 innings of relief. Spartan starter Nick Starnes allowed just one run on five hits and struck out a game-high five batters in four innings on the mound.
Nick Rogers (2-4) took the loss after giving up five runs on eights hits in 4-1/3 innings on the hill.
UNCG (15-14) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the home half of the first. Junior Tim Carrier and Gaski each reached on a single to open the inning. Welsh followed with a double right to score Carrier from second. Gaski was brought home on a groundout before a Feltes single up the middle plated Welsh.
NC A&T (9-18) got on the board in the fourth on a RBI single from Kory Kinnear. The Spartans, however, responded with two runs in the fifth. Schneider laced a one-out double to right to score Gaski, who walked earlier. Welsh came home on a sacrifice fly from Feltes, giving UNCG the 5-1 lead.
The Spartans added two more runs in the sixth, using an Aggie error and a wild pitch for the 7-1 advantage. NC A&T came back with a run in the seventh when Jeremy Jones sent a RBI double to leftfield, scoring Joe McIntyre. UNCG quickly answered in the bottom of the same inning by putting up five runs.
Schneider reached on a walk and Feltes doubled to open the inning. Brandon Harvey advanced on another Aggie error that also allowed Schneider to score and Feltes to advance to third. A single from Logan Smith scored Feltes and a double from Corey Overholtzer drove in Harvey. A groundout RBI from Carrier and a RBI single from Gaski closed out the inning to give UNCG the 12-2 lead.
The Aggies rallied by scoring two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings. A RBI double from Joe Wade and a sacrifice fly in the eighth cut the Spartan lead, 12-4. In the ninth, Charlie Gamble sent a two-run home run over right-center but the rally wasn't enough.
UNCG returns to Southern Conference action when the Spartans travel to Furman for a three-game series beginning Friday at 7 pm. Friday's game will be played at West End Field, the home of the Single A South Atlantic League Greenville Drive.
