CULLOWHEE, NC UNC Greensboro held the lead through the majority of the game, but a four-run rally by Western Carolina in the seventh pulled them past the Spartans and away with a 9-5 victory. With the win the Catamounts take the weekend series, 2-1.
UNCG moves to 18-7 overall with a 4-2 conference record. Western is now 10-15 on the season and 2-4 in the league.
First baseman Ricky Orton tabbed his 29th RBI of the season to put UNCG on the board first in the top of the third inning. Orton's groundout to second base took the focus off of second baseman Tim Carrier who was standing on third and allowed him to cross the plate.
Further down the lineup, centerfielder Corey Overholtzer slapped a double to score Greg Feltes and Sean Snell who had both reached on singles.
In the home half of the third, Western Carolina's Brent Greer singled to leftfield and brought in their first run of the game.
Leading 3-1, UNCG plated two more in the fifth. Feltes was first brought in off of an Orton single. Orton then crossed the plated thanks to a walk and upped the Spartan lead to 5-1.
The Catamounts cut the lead down by two in the sixth off of a sacrifice fly and a tag up following a foul out to the second baseman.
With the Spartans still holding a 5-3 lead heading into the seventh inning, WCU jumped on a four-run rally to pull away with the lead. The Catamounts extended their lead even further in the eighth with a right center home run by Tyler Kirkpatrick and an RBI single by Barrett Shaft.
UNCG was held silent in the ninth as Western Carolina took the 9-5 victory.
UNCG was led at the plate by Greg Feltes who was 2-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one walk to extend his hit streak to 14 games. WCU was led by Barrett Shaft went 3-for-5 with two RBI, one run, and one walk.
Western's Chris Masters (2-2) took the win after 5.0 innings on the mound and three strikeouts. UNCG's Wes McCall (0-1) tabbed his first loss after just 0.1 innings on the rubber. Spartan starter Greg Smith notched a team high five strikeouts while on the mound.
