GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro starter Warren Slack pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings and Ed Jayjack's home run in the second inning help the Spartans defeat Old Dominion, 4-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Slack allowed just three hits and struck out five for the Spartans (2-8) and Greg Smith pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief to record his first save of the season.
Old Dominion starter Ben Tomchick allowed just one run on three hits for the Monarchs (3-10) to pick up the hard-luck loss.
Jayjack got the scoring started in the second inning thanks to his first home run of the season. With one out in the inning, Jayjack took the first pitch he saw off the scoreboard in right field to give the Spartans an early 1-0 lead.
After neither team could plate a run in the next four innings, the Spartans pushed two runners across in the seventh thanks to a Monarch error. With one out in the inning, Michael Wall hit a single up the middle. After a line out to center field, Pedro Leon was hit by a pitch to move Wall over to second. Overholtzer followed and reached first on a throwing error by the shortstop that scored Wall from second to make the score 2-0. Ray Quinones was up next and doubled down the left field line to plate Leon from second and give the Spartans a 3-0 advantage.
The Monarchs wouldn't go down without a fight as they responded in the top of the eighth with a two-out rally. Gerard Hall singled and then scored from first on a double by Jake McAloose to bring Old Dominion within 3-1, but Matt Parish came in and got Donnie Corsner to strike out to end the threat.
The Spartans would add an insurance run in the bottom half of the eighth inning to make the final score 4-1. Drew Gehringer led off the inning with his second double of the game. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Gehringer scored on a fielder's choice by Ed Jayjack. Jayjack's chopper was stopped by the second baseman who threw home, but Gehringer alertly slid under the tag by catcher Edgar Hernandez.
UNCG returns to the diamond on Friday evening at the Spartans kick off a three-game series with SoCon foe Georgia Southern at 7 p.m. at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
