GREENSBORO, N.C. – After another week full of softball, the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team hosts its fourth ACC opponent in Boston College for a Tuesday afternoon matchup at UNCG Softball Stadium.

First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
 
HOME SWEET HOME
UNCG is 8-1 at home.
 
This is the best start at the UNCG Softball Stadium for the Spartans since the 1997 season when the team went 14-0 at home.
 
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Senior Delaney Cumbie was tabbed SoCon Player of the Week most recently after helping UNCG to a 3-2 week.

OUT OF THE PARK
The Spartans have recorded at least one home run in 16 of the 18 games played this season.
 
UNCG has had 10 games with two or more home runs. The Spartans have had three games with three home runs.
 
Graduate student Makenna Matthijs and junior Blayke Batten leads the team with five home runs each. Five Spartans have recorded three home runs, including senior Delaney Cumbie, junior Maycin Brown, freshman Grace Loftin, graduate student Jordan Gontram, and senior Hannah Kincer.
 
Junior Brooklynn Maxwell and freshman Shipley have notched two homers each, while senior Samantha Lagrama has launched one home run.
 
NATIONAL RANKINGS
  • The first NCAA Division I Ratings Power Index (RPI) came out and UNCG is 48th.
  • UNCG is eighth in the nation with 30 home runs.
  • UNCG is also eighth in the nation averaging 1.67 home runs per game.
  • Morgan Scott is first in hit batters (1).
  • Scott is fourth in innings pitched (76.2)
  • Delaney Cumbie is ninth in hit-by-pitch per game (0.43).
SPARTANS' LAST TIME OUT
  • UNCG went 3-2 last week, with wins over UConn and two over Penn State.
  • The Spartans split on Sunday at the Carolina Classic with an 8-4 win over the Nittany Lions and an 8-7 loss to North Carolina.
  • Freshman Graysen Hunter threw her first-collegiate complete game against Penn State for her second win of the season.
  • Matthijs launched a two-run home run and a grand slam. The grand slam was the third of her career and the Spartans' second on the season.
  • Maxwell and Cumbie also recorded home runs on Sunday.
  • UNCG tallied 14 hits against North Carolina for the most this season.
PRESEASON PRESENTS
UNCG was chosen as the Southern Conference (SoCon) favorite in the preseason poll for the second-straight season.
Graduate student Makenna Matthijs was voted Preseason Player of the Year, as well as to the first team as an outfielder.
 
Junior Morgan Scott was selected as Preseason Pitcher of the Year, as well as to the first team.
 
Senior catcher Delaney Cumbie and junior infielder Maycin Brown were also tabbed on the first team.
 
Sophomore infielder Brooklynn Maxwell was voted to the second team.

FRESH FACES
Head Coach Janelle Breneman welcomed five additions to the 2022 Blue & Gold squad, including two pitchers, two infielders, and an outfielder.
The pitchers: Reese Byrd (Suffolk, Va.) and Graysen Hunter (Williamston, S.C.)
The infielders: Jessie Shipley (Sugar Land, Texas) and Meredith Harwood (Stanfield, N.C.)
The outfielder: Grace Loftin (Conover, N.C.)

DEPTH IN RETURNERS
Fourteen Spartans are listed on the roster from last year's team, including eight that started in 20 or more of the 51 games played in 2021.
 
Last season the Spartans saw five players bat above .300. Three of the five are returning, including offensive leader Matthijs who averaged .355 at the plate and was third in the SoCon. The two others are: Brown (.352) and Maxwell (.301).
 
Matthijs, Scott, Cumbie, and Brown also return as UNCG had six ranked in the top 100 in individual stat categories. Scott was named SoCon Pitcher and Freshman of the Year, as well as selected to the All-SoCon first team in 2021.

SCOUTING BOSTON COLLEGE
  • Boston College finished the 2021 season with a 13-32 overall record and an 8-24 ACC mark.
  • Boston College heads to Greensboro with a 10-7 overall record.
  • The Eagles split games on Sunday, as they defeated Villanova, 4-3, and fell to Charlotte 4-1 at the UNC Charlotte Tournament.
  • Senior pitcher Susannah Anderson returns after being named to the 2021 NFCA All-Region third team in the Mid-Atlantic.
  • Currently, Anderson has thrown 40.1 innings, given up 46 hits and has a 3-3 record with one save and a 2.78 ERA.
  • Peyton Schnackenberg is second on the team with 42.2 innings pitched, giving up 44 hits with a 4-1 record and a 2.95 ERA.
  • At the plate, Ellie Mataya leads the Eagles with a .439 batting average starting and playing in all 17 games.
  • Mataya and Anderson and were named to the 2021 All-ACC second and third team, respectively.
  • Hannah Slike and Darien McDonough lead the Eagles with 11 RBI each, as Slike is second on the team with a .431 batting average.
  • Five Eagles have tallied double-digit hits, Mataya and Slike lead with 25 each.
HISTORY VS. BOSTON COLLEGE
  • Boston College leads the series 5-2.
  • The Spartans have won the last two games against the Eagles.
  • The most recent was on Feb. 28, 2004 when UNCG won 2-0 in the Charleston Southern Tournament in Summerville, S.C.
