CHARLESTON, SC – UNCG allowed five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the College of Charleston pulled away for an 11-4 win on Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point Stadium.
Tom Schiller pitched seven innings for the Cougars (8-2, 2-0) while only allowing four hits and one run to pick up his third win of the season.
Senior Pedro Leon was a bright spot for the Spartans (1-7, 0-2) after hitting 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Cougars got on the board early in the game for the second straight day after Joey Bergman hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead.
College of Charleston made it 3-0 in the bottom half of the second inning after another home run. With one out in the inning, Mike Hentz reached on a UNCG error. Matt Mansilla followed that up with a shot over the left field wall for his fourth home run of the season.
The Spartans narrowed the score to 3-1 in the top of the third thanks to a solo home run. Leon led off the inning and took the first pitch out to left center for his first home run of the season.
After UNCG got the Cougars to ground into a double play in the top of the fourth inning Cole Rakar hit a solo home run over the center field wall to put CofC ahead 4-1.
The Cougars scored one more run in the sixth inning, before exploding for five runs in the seventh inning to push their lead to 10-1. With one out in the inning, Brandon Sizemore doubled off the wall and scored on a Ryan Daniels single to right field. Joash Brodin followed that up with a double down the right field line to move Daniels to third. After Daniels scored on an error, Mansilla came up and hit his second home run of the game to make the score 10-1.
After the College of Charleston scored another run in the eighth inning, the Spartans rallied to score three runs in the ninth inning. Drew Gehringer led off the inning with a walk, but was out at second on a Jacob Golliday fielder's choice. Golliday would advance to second on Eric Temple's infield single before the Cougars would get the second out of the inning on a strikeout. Kris Richards was up next and loaded the bases after he reached on an error by the shortstop. Pedro Leon reached on an infield single to knock in his second run of the game. Junior Corey Overholtzer followed with a double down the left field line to plate the final two runs of the afternoon.
UNCG will wrap up its three-game series with the Cougars on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Patriots Point Stadium.
