UNCG Looks to Extend SoCon Streak at ETSU

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team will leave the state for the first time since February 12, as it travels to Johnson City, Tennessee to face its fourth Southern Conference (SoCon) opponent in ETSU.

The Spartans have extended their conference win streak to nine with three-straight sweeps over Mercer, Western Carolina, and Chattanooga. UNCG is 28-11 overall.

With probably its toughest schedule in head coach Janelle Breneman's time at the helm, UNCG continues to dominate the conference in multiple categories, as well as is ranked among the nation in a handful.

SOCON SUPREMACY
UNCG has won nine-straight SoCon games to start the 2022 campaign after registering its third-consecutive sweep.  
 
UNCG has won 14-straight regular-season games against SoCon opponents dating back to the 2021 season.

UNCG has won 17-straight overall games against conference foes, including post-season games.
 
CLIMBING HIGH (UNCG CAREER RECORDS)
  • Jordan Gontram is tied for second with 46 home runs and eighth with 127 RBI.
  • Makenna Matthijs is third with 168 runs, fourth with 47 doubles and 159 RBI, tied for sixth with 36 home runs, sixth with 710 at bats, ninth with 81 walks, and 10th with 212 hits.
  • Delaney Cumbie is second with 119 walks, sixth with 120 runs, and 10th with 29 home runs.
  • Morgan Scott is fourth with 505 strikeouts and ninth with 45 wins.
OUT OF THE PARK
The Spartans have recorded at least one home run in 32 games this season.
 
In a 19-1 domination over Mercer on Sunday, March 27, the Spartans slugged eight home runs for the most home runs in a game in head coach Janelle Breneman's era and to stats dating back to 2007.
 
Three of the eight came from Grace Loftin. This was the fourth time in program history that a Spartan has hit three home runs in a game.
 
UNCG has had 23 games with two or more home runs. The Spartans have had four games with three home runs. There have been four games with four home runs, two games with five home runs, and one game with a season-best eight homers.
 
Four Spartans have reached the double-digit home run mark, with Jordan Gontram leading the way with 12 home runs, while Grace Loftin, Delaney Cumbie, and Makenna Matthijs are second with 10 homers. Cumbie's 10 are a single season high. Blayke Batten has had single season high nine homers, as Maycin Brown and Samantha Lagrama have eight each.
 
Jessie Shipley has five and Brooklynn Maxwell and Hannah Kincer round out the Spartan homer brigade with four and three, respectively. Maxwell's four is a single season high.

AWARDS ON AWARDS
Scott and Loftin were most recently named SoCon Pitcher and Player of the Month, respectively, for March.
Scott tallied her third SoCon Pitcher of the Week honor after an impressive week of a 0.33 ERA.
Junior Maycin Brown was named SoCon Player of the Week and Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player of the Week during the week of March 28.
Scott earned her second SoCon Pitcher of the Week honor on March 28.
Freshman Grace Loftin was named SoCon Player of the Week and D1 Softball Freshman of the Week on March 21.
Junior Maycin Brown was tabbed SoCon Player of the Month for February.
Scott was selected SoCon Pitcher of the Week on March 14.
Senior Delaney Cumbie was tabbed SoCon Player of the Week on March 7 after helping UNCG to a 3-2 week.
Junior Blayke Batten led the way for the Spartans during their five-game week. She earned UNCG's second Player of the Week award on Feb. 28.
Graduate student Jordan Gontram earned the first SoCon Player of the Week award for the Spartans announced on Feb. 21.

SPARTANS' LAST TIME OUT
  • UNCG swept its third conference opponent when it hosted Chattanooga last weekend on April 9 and 10.
  • The Spartans won 9-4, 5-3, and 3-2.
  • In the first contest, Morgan Scott struck out 15 batters, one shy of her career high.
  • Scott then earned her second-career save in game two, and struck out 12 batters in game three.
  • Maycin Brown, Grace Loftin, Delaney Cumbie, Jordan Gontram, and Makenna Matthijs crushed homers.
SCOUTING ETSU
  • ETSU's lone SoCon win was a 3-2 victory over Western Carolina on March 27 in Johnson City.
  • The Bucs lead the conference in stolen bases per game (2.26).
  • The Bucs are averaging .226 at the plate as a team, with Andrea Sarhatt leading the way with a .308 batting clip.
  • Kelly Warren leads the team with 12 RBI, while Sarhatt and Sara Muir are tied for second with 10 RBI.
  • Sarhatt and Warren lead the team with 17 runs scored and Cameron Young has crossed home 10 times.
  • Those three Bucs have also accumulated double-digit stolen bases.
  • Warren has successfully taken 22 bases, while Sarhatt and Young have accumulated 14 and 11, respectively.
  • In 21 appearances, Allison Farr holds a 3-10 record in the circle with two complete games and 75.0 innings pitched.
  • Farr has kept batters at a .296 batting average.
  • Riley Tucker and Taylor Boling each have a win as well.
HISTORY VS. ETSU
  • UNCG leads the series 30-9.
  • During the 2021 season, UNCG went 2-1 against the Bucs.
