In just the fourth year of the program's existence, the UNCG baseball team made history in 1994.

The Spartans became the first team in the university's Division I era to record an NCAA Championship win after making the tournament in just its fourth season. UNCG went 39-18 in the 1994 season, winning the Big South Conference title and advancing to the South Regional in Baton Rouge, La.

At the NCAA South Regional, the Spartans went 2-2 to finish third among the six teams. UNCG defeated Southeastern Louisiana and Tulane, while losing twice to national power Southern California.

Coach Mike Gaski was named the conference's coach of the year as Joey DeAngelis, Steve Matyczyk and Tonka Maynor earned all-conference honors. After hitting .379 with 37 stolen bases in 42 attempts that year. Maynor went on to become a 27th-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates later that summer. Tim Giles was named a Mizuno Freshman All-American that year, as well.
