ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
Dr. David B. Knight served the University for more than 30 years as a professor in the chemistry department and 18 years as the first Faculty Athletics Representative. David or "Big Dave" as he was affectionately called, had a heart of gold. He worked tirelessly to promote athletics and the notion that student-athletes were first and foremost "students." He firmly believed that the welfare of the student-athlete was extremely important and worked to affect change on a national scale to improve their overall experience both educationally and athletically for all student-athletes.
David served as the first-ever chairman of the Division I Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet. In that role, he guided the membership of Division I through difficult waters of academic reform. He worked tirelessly to help devise a system of reforms that would be fair and effective, and was successful in implementing such a system. In the NCAA's salute to David, it was stated that "David's contributions to the NCAA's efforts towards academic reform were unmatched by any other individual. He performed his duties with courage, grace, humility, and a wonderful sense of humor."
David also left his mark on the Faculty Athletics Representatives Association (FARA). He served as that group's president. He holds the honor of being the only individual to have served in the capacity of FAR at all three NCAA divisional levels which he did at UNCG as she moved from Division III to the Division I competitive level.
