Dr. Frank Pleasants joined the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1965 as an assistant professor in the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Department. In 1967, he was named the first Men's Division Coordinator which oversaw the design and implementation of men's athletics at UNCG. He and a group of visionaries, including Ethel Martus Lawther and Dr.June Galloway, began the task of laying the foundation that UNCG Athletics would be built upon. These pioneers were responsible for determining all of the identifiers affiliated with Spartan athletics including deciding on the Spartan mascot and the use of white and gold as uniform colors.

During a time when the university enrollment of male students was under 650, Dr. Pleasants had the daunting task of determining budgetary needs, facility needs, and which men's programs the school would sponsor to carry UNCG into the future.

In 1967, the University applied for membership into the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the first men's athletics teams took to the courts of competition.
