Scott Hartzell is one of the men's basketball players that put UNCG on the floor at "The Big Dance". Hartzell guided UNCG from its infancy stage as a Division I men's basketball team to the NCAA Basketball Tournament in 1996. The first male athlete to have his jersey retired, he led UNCG to the 1996 Big South Championship, for which he was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player. That resulted in a match-up with Cincinnati in the NCAA Tournament, where the Spartans nearly pulled off the upset.

Scott graduated as the men's basketball program's all-time leading scorer at the time and was also the leader in career assists upon his departure. He still holds UNCG's record for career three-pointers made, three-pointers attempted, and three-point shooting percentage.

A first-team All-Big South selection in 1994-95, Scott led UNCG in three-pointer field goals, three-point shooting percentage, and free throw shooting percentage all four seasons (1992-96) and led the team in scoring in three of the four.
