The 1986 Spartans picked up the program's second straight National Championship and fourth all-time.  UNCG won its final eight games of the season on its way to an 18-5-0 mark and a 6-1-0 record in the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  The Spartans outscored their NCAA opponents by an 11-4 margin and played two one-goal games along the way.

The Spartans won the National Championship with a 2-0 victory over UC-San Diego on their home field in Greensboro. Andrew Mehalko led the way as he earned third-team All-America accolades. Tom Lehoczky and Michael Myretetus were First Team All-Dixie selections and Carl Fleming, Alvin James, Bill Sutherland, and Willie Lopez earned All-Dixie Second Team.
