Chelsea Sumney Hartness ’13 is one of the most accomplished distance runners in UNCG history, excelling in both cross country and track. A consistent and determined competitor, she represented the Spartans in five NCAA events during her career—three in cross country and two in outdoor track — competing at the highest level of collegiate athletics.

Hartness demonstrated her excellence in both disciplines, earning a USTFCCCA All-Region Award and collecting six All-Southern Conference honors, a résumé that placed her among the leading distance runners of her era. She consistently represented the Spartans at conference, regional and national-caliber meets, providing both individual excellence and team leadership.

Hartness’ efforts helped the UNCG women capture the first SoCon Cross Country Championship in program history in 2011, as she placed fifth with her time of 17:12.80. Hartness ran 21:01.0 at the 2012 NCAA Southeast Regional and 21:54.0 at the 2013 regional. She also posted 16:57.30 in the 5,000 meters at the 2012 NCAA East Preliminary Round and a 10:43.16 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2014 NCAA East Preliminary Round.

Her competitive strength was evident throughout her career. In 2012, Hartness captured the individual title at the Elon Invitational, winning the 5K in 17:44 and finishing 34 seconds ahead of the runner-up. The victory marked her first individual collegiate title and extended UNCG’s winning streak in the women’s race at the event to three consecutive years.

Hartness’s impact extended beyond a single event or season. She was a consistent scoring presence for the Spartans in cross country and carried that same competitive drive to the track, where she qualified for NCAA competition twice. Her six All-SoCon honors reflect her ability to sustain elite performance across the demanding cross country, indoor, and outdoor seasons.

Through her discipline, competitive spirit, and commitment to the Spartan standard, Hartness built a legacy that continues to inspire UNCG student-athletes.
