ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
Joe Thompson ’12 was a cornerstone of UNCG’s cross country and track programs, establishing a legacy defined by endurance, consistency and championship-level competitiveness. A standout distance runner, Thompson made multiple NCAA appearances in both cross country and outdoor track. His abilities made him a vital contributor to the growth and success of the Spartans’ distance program.
Thompson earned four All-Southern Conference honors in cross country, including three First Team honors and All-Freshman Team recognition. He earned three top-five finishes in four SoCon Cross Country Championships, with his best finish being runner-up in the 2010 Championships.
His performances remain among the top 10 in UNCG history in multiple track events. He holds UNCG records in the outdoor 3000-meter run (8:31.25 – 2009) and 3000-meter steeplechase (8:59.45 – 2012). He also has top 10 marks in the indoor 800-meter run, indoor mile, indoor 3000-meter run and 1500-meter outdoor event.
Thompson was named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team in track for the outdoor 1500-meter run, indoor mile and 3,000-meter run.
Through his commitment, work ethic, and sustained excellence, Thompson set a standard for student-athletes who followed him.
