Doug Hamilton was a four-year letter winner ( 1981-83, 1985) at UNCG and was a key member of three NCAA Division Ill national championship squads (1982-83, 1985). UNCG was 78-1 1-2 (.868) during his four seasons.

But as much as Hamilton excelled on the pitch, he made a name for himself in the American soccer community off the field. After serving four seasons as head coach at Greensboro College, Hamilton worked with Adidas America, spending six years as director of sports marketing in Latin America while also serving as business unit manager of soccer and basketball.

Hamilton later became a key figure in the development and success of Major League Soccer, serving as an executive with the Miami Fusion and L.A. Galaxy. He was named MLS Executive of the Year three consecutive years (2003-05), helping the Galaxy to MLS championships
in 2002 and 2005.

Hamilton died tragically from a heart attack on March 8, 2006, at the age of 43. The MLS has since named its top executive award the Doug Hamilton Executive of the Year award in his honor.
