Shaina Sumney Kernodle ’13 distinguished herself as one of the premier distance runners in UNCG history, competing in cross country and track throughout her Spartan career. A poised and accomplished competitor, she made five NCAA appearances, earned five All-Southern Conference honors and ranks among UNCG’s all-time leaders in multiple events.

In cross country, Kernodle earned First Team All-SoCon recognition in both 2010 and 2011. She finished fourth at the 2010 SoCon Championships in 17:56.41 and followed with a seventh-place finish in 2011, clocking 17:17.60 for a personal best. Her efforts helped the UNCG women capture the first SoCon Cross Country Championship in program history in 2011. At the NCAA Southeast Regional, she recorded a 6K best of 20:56.90.

Kernodle was equally accomplished on the track. She earned All-SoCon honors in the indoor mile and outdoor 5,000 meters, and she was runner-up in the 1,500 meters at the 2012 SoCon Outdoor Championships with a personal-best time of 4:33.55. That performance qualified her for the NCAA East Preliminary Round. She also contributed to two SoCon champion distance medley relay teams, including the 2012 squad that set a conference-meet record of 11:43.99.

Her personal bests demonstrate both her range and endurance: 2:14.86 in the 800 meters, 4:50.85 in the indoor mile, 9:42.16 in the 3,000 meters, 16:31.43 in the indoor 5,000 meters, and 16:35.00 outdoors at 5,000 meters.

Her excellence was recognized with multiple Academic All-Conference honors and the SoCon Commissioner’s Medal, reflecting the same commitment in the classroom that she brought to the course and track.
